I have always got my annual fee refunded on my citi AA cards. If you intend to keep the card, then just call them when the annual fee shows up and tell them you want to close the card. They will give you some kind of an offer, For me it was spend $95 in 2 billing cycles and you will get $95 credit.

If I understand it correctly, you changed the 7/21/15 Platinum AA MC to World Elite, with the purpose of being able to apply for another Platinum AA MC on 10/7/15. Is this correct? If so, this seems to be a trick to get around the "18 month" rule?

Very valuable data, thanks!

There is no way for the cardholder to initiate the change/conversion . CMIIAW

Has anyone had a W->WE conversion in the last month or two? My Plat from October still hasn't been converted which is causing me to delay closing my first Plat from March (that was converted after 30-45 days).

Same thing for DW's AA Plat account. She hadn't really spent much on it at all, and despite multiple HUCA attempts, Citi would not offer ANYTHING at all. CSRs flat out refused to connect her with a retention specialist, saying her account "doesn't qualify for that". She finally downgraded to a no AF Double Cash card.

Something along the lines of
"Good morning, I recently reached the minimum spend on my Citi AA Platinum card and from my understanding I'll receive a bonus of 50,000 AA miles. I've also noticed that there is an offer out there for 60,000 AA miles for reaching the same minimum spend. I'm just looking for a match in that offer. I appreciate your help!"
As it's been said, YMMV and good luck!

Does anyone know how converting from a Platinum World MC to Bronze to avoid the annual fee when it comes due affects how Citi views applying for another World MC (or other Citi AAdvantage card with a signup bonus)? Does this count as closing an account even if the account number stays the same and a new credit account isn't actually opened? I am trying to determine if converting to a no-fee lower-end Aadvantage card is treated just like closing the card when it comes to the 18 month rule.
Any insight is appreciated. Thanks.

We don't have enough datapoints to know yet for sure whether a conversion will count as closure. We can see how Citi might treat it that way. There simply haven't been people who've converted after 1 year, then applied again after 18+ months from the initial application (but way before 18 months since the conversion), and came back to report (either success or failure of getting bonus on the new card). It is such datapoints which would be required for us to know for sure. In the absence of datapoints, all we have in speculation, informed or otherwise.

Whoa, so you've had the Citi AA Plat MC for a whole year+ (ie, you're calling after the annual fee already got billed, right?) and you've never had it converted to a World Elite in all that time? (That's a key datapoint which didn't spring up until you I compared your two posts to figure out the implied timing.) How low is your credit score, just curious?

Did you have any notice at all that it had been done? Any notice in your online account, card changing name (no longer having "World" in the name online), etc.?

Thanks. Excellent question and datapoints. This is exactly what I came here to check on. We've got one from early November that I was expecting to see converted within the next few days, but it looks like it may be taking ~2 months now (or the timing here could be coincidental). Either way, good to know that it's still happening.

Two points, replying to separate questions:
1. When Citi granted my request for an additional 10k miles (on top of my card's 50k offer), I had not yet met the minimum spend
2. The Citi AAdvantage Platinum card I got in November was just converted to WE last week
