When do my Thank You points expire?

It depends.

It's important to understand that if you have multiple Citi cards ("sponsor accounts") generating points into a single TY account, those pooled points may have different expiration dates based upon the rules of the corresponding sponsor account. Points from some sponsor accounts never expire as long as the sponsor account is open, while others have an expiration date based on the date of earning. (For a comprehensive list of expiration rules, see the TYP T&C.)

To complicate matters further, points-earning activity from a sponsor account will often extend the validity of older points from that same sponsor account.

What happens when I cancel a credit card from which I have earned TY points?

Points previously earned from that sponsor account will expire after 60 days.

What happens when I downgrade a Prestige card or Premier card from which I've earned TY points?

A product change from one ThankYou earning card to another ThankYou earning card should keep the points from expiring.

What are the rules for sharing points from my account to another TY account?

If you share points with (that is, make an internal TY transfer to) another TY account, those points will expire 90 days after the transfer. Note that
  • this is true regardless of whether you share to another TY user or to another TY account you hold (if you have multiple TY accounts);
  • you may not share points that are expiring in less than 90 days; and
  • you may not share more than 100K points (or receive more than 100K shared TY points) in any calendar year.

For details, see ThankYou Point Sharing capped at 100,000 points per calendar year

When I redeem points (for travel, gift cards, etc.), which ones does Citi use up first?

Citi will use the points with the soonest expiration date, which may or may not be points from a canceled sponsor account.

How can I see my expiring points?

Follow these steps:
  1. Log into your Thank You account (either directly or via citicards.com)
  2. From the My Account menu (top right of screen), select either "My Account Overview" or "My Points Summary"
  3. Look for a statement near the top of the screen such as "You do not have any points expiring within the next 60 days or less"
  4. Select "View all expiring points"
  5. Alternate: If logged in, you should be able to see the list at:https://www.thankyou.com/accountStatementExpiry.jspx
Note: The totals displayed will not include points expiring within 60 days as a result of closing a sponsor account. SOURCE

Why do I see a warning that points expire in 7 days after converting from Citi Preferred to Citi Rewards+?

Citi acknowledges this message can appear in error after converting from one ThankYou credit card to another type of ThankYou credit card. If your points actually expired they will adjust the point balance upon request. In at least one case, the expiration never occurred despite the message.

If you converted a ThankYou credit card to a non-ThankYou credit card, that may be a different issue, and it's possible points really will expire by the stated deadline.
The info about 24-month clocks vs product changes came from these web pages:

I cancelled my TY Premier card 36 days ago, but the points have not yet expired, and it appears I can still book flights at 1.33 cents/point. Is this about to disappear? I thought this would be gone at 30 days...

Thanks!

"Note: The totals displayed will not include points expiring within 30 days as a result of closing a sponsor account."

I have two TY Premier cards, one Mastercard and one Visa. Both pooled into the same TY account.

Closed the MC down and going to keep the Visa. Have a good amount of points earned from both.

Still nothing showing on the "expiring page".

How can I find out how many and when the points will expire?

Why not? You can isolate according to sponsor account using the pull-down menu; even if that doesn't work for cards that are already canceled, you can see the sponsor account source (listed by name and last 4 digits) for all the points in the TYP account.

One thing I was not clear on -- if you upgrade or downgrade a card, does that count as closing it for points expiration purposes?
I read through the thread but I'm not clear on this either. Could someone confirm?

Say you were to downgrade a Preferred Thankyou account to a regular Thankyou account, do the points earned when the account was Preferred still never expire?

Or does a downgrade count as a cancellation of the sponsor account, starting the clock on the 30 day point expiration?

I converted a Citi TY Premier to a Citi Forward in early July, and my points have not expired.

Questions here: I have around 40k points, when I check points summary I see it says "3423 points expire in 90 days", then I can assume the rest with no expiration date?

No. You should check the expiration for all your points, as described in the wiki.

Confused about points expiration

I have the Thank you Premier, and am preparing to make some changes due to the devaluation.

I have quite a number of flight points, and ideally will keep the card long enough to match them with spend, as well as continue to enjoy the 15% discount and companion ticket through my anniversary. Likely I'll apply for the prestige card to pick up where this one left off.

Once I use up my flight points, I'll likely cancel the premier. My question is, what about my remaining thank you point balance earned with the premier? It seems, based on this thread, that they'll expire in 30 days.

My initial pan was going to be sign up for a new prestige to get the signup bonus. But perhaps converting in this case is a better plan? I assume a conversion would mean the points wouldn't expire? What if I downgrade from premier to the preferred? Would that avoid an annual fee and keep these points from expiring?

Any advice is appreciated.

Correct. Converting, whether up or down, maintains the points in the account. I converted my Premier card to a Preferred when the fee came due last year.

Discussion of Citi Rewards Account Number has no apparent connection to canceling, downgrading or expiration. Moved to this thread:

Has Citibank discontinued the ability to see the expiration date of all ThankYou Points?

I used to be able to click on the expiring points, and then choose show all, and see a breakdown of all expiring points (just a s the wiki above reflects). However, for the last week or so, when I see the expiring points, there is nothing to click in that area, and the question mark directs me to see the terms & conditions of each of my sponsor accounts to determine when points expire.

Is anyone else unable to see the expiration date of all sponsor accounts as well as the remaining number of points per sponsor account?

I'm seeing the same thing. A really rotten downgrade, one I hope isn't permanent.
