Might be me reading too quickly but I've not found information regarding this section in TIMATIC of KLM's website I ran across:
Code:
 - This does not apply at Urumqi (URC).
Visa required, except for Holders of confirmed onward airline
tickets, in transit through Urumqi (URC), for a max. transit
For details, click here time of 2 hours.

^ Great news. Loyalty Lobby posted about it as well:

Soon the days of standing in line at the consulate as an annual tradition will be distant memory!

Let's not update this thread until 144 hour TWOV shows up on TIMATIC. In the meantime, we can post to the following thread:

This clause about Urumqi, if you are reading it correctly, would be VERY new. I don't have access to the actual latest-and-greatest TIMATIC but perhaps somebody who does can verify this, and the entire context around it. Quite a number of transit connections route through Urumqi coming from Europe, Central Asia, and a bit of Middle East....especially China Southern flights. I can't imagine CZ would be thrilled about this, though many of their most popular routings transiting through China (usually URC + CAN) are already tightly scheduled. But this could easily trip somebody up.

If this is a new and valid insertion, my guess is that it's been done for security reasons due to Urumqi/Xinjiang situation. And that it may only be temporary.

I will do some work to fix up the wiki. Nanjing, which we were waiting for to appear in the 72-hour TWOV category is in the 144-hour section. Still nothing in TIATIC about Changsha (CSX) (that I can see)

I have updated the wiki. It now includes a section on 144-hour visa, restrictions on Urumqi, and TWOV at nanjing.

There is a caveat around the 'movement of travellers' under the 144-hour TWOV in that it may allow travel between participating provinces, with the section to be updated as we get data points.

The wiki states that 24 hour TWOV is the only option if you have multiple stops in China, and that is probably still the best advice at the moment? I think it still holds true for most cities with the exception of those now eligible for 144-hour.

Eligible 144-hour TWOV cities have been removed from the 72-hour list, as reflected in TIMATIC.

I don't have access to the full TIMATIC (have requested KVS to assist us with that).

So I pulled out the TIMATIC from KLM based on a US citizen. Other countries are also eligible for 144-hour TWOV - looks like it could be those which are already on the list for 72-hour TWOV.

The exception is UK passport holders - the 144-hour is not showing for them at this time... but they are eligible for 72-hour TWOV.

I've updated the wiki to that effect.

Once we have an up to date TIMATIC extract I'd advise prospective travellers to check their passport for eligibility.

I note that it only mentions airport. No reference to trains or ships.
