A bit more detail here:

Eta: Just to be clear, this pertains to visa free transit, not visa on arrival.

Land and sea included. Land meaning it should be possible to take the direct Hong Kong-Shanghai train and get the 144 hr visa free transit to a third country.

It does appear that way^

The other important point is that it permits travel throughout Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang; you're no longer limited to staying in your city of arrival.

"过境免签人员的停留区域范围扩大,将符合过境免签政策人员活动范围由只能在三省市各自行政区域内停留扩大 到上海、江苏、浙江三省市所在的长三角区域"

Pretty exciting.

As always - I guess the advice will be to see when this appears in TIMATIC. Without the 'official' notification, you may have difficulty boarding at your point of origin.

Assuming they follow the "Guangzhou Rule," it's a shame they're continuing the confusion by calling this a 144-hour visa. They should simply call this a six-day visa, not counting the day of arrival.

Yes, if you like suffering!

Just pointing the obvious, these are news articles, not official publications. We'll have to wait for official statements and databases like TIMATIC to reflect this.

Let's remember that air-sea transit have been officially allowed for a long time but it has been impossible as they won't let you board a flight or cruise for such transit without a visa. We'll see if things are different now.

I'm having a 2 day TWOV through Shanghai next week using my British passport. I'll report back whether I get the 72h or 144h TWOV.

Regarding the Hong Kong - Mainland HSR line, I wonder how they would enforce foreign passengers to only get off the train in 江浙沪 - By making them sitting in a designated area with immigration officers?

To qualify as a transit flights need to be non-stop. So similarly, an HSR train from HK that stops somewhere along the way to Shanghai would probably not qualify.

Based on my reading, the train WILL qualify, but let's wait and see.
