There are 9 high speed trains daily Nanning to Liuzhou, 223 km away, all of them are nonstop and take 1:34 save D8216 that for some reason takes 1:29. All of them except one go on to Guilin. The departures Nanning-Liuzhou are from 6:25 to 20:50. The return trips Liuzhou-Nanning leave from 8:40 to 21:51.

No high speed train gets through Guilin. There are 3 trains daily Guilin-Changsha, of which 1 goes to Beijing.

It seems like every other person I meet in Nanning is from Liuzhou and they are all quite happy with the D trains. However, most of them are either driving themselves there for the holiday or taking buses because the trains sold out about a week ago.

I ended up getting my physical train ticket printed out at the same kiosk that refused to sell me a ticket yesterday because my colleagues warned me that picking it up at the train station would not be pleasant. (Actually, I did that drill on National Day and things went fairly smoothly, but I really don't want to spend any more time in the train station than is absolutely necessary.)

So 9 D trains daily is not enough for Liuzhou - more are needed. Then how would 1 train daily suffice for Beihai?
There are also 16 other trains daily, taking 2:54 (T286) to 3:20 (K142). Total is 3 T, 12 K and 1 number train. Are those sold out as well?

These holidays don't happen all the time so I'm not sure I would conclude that 9 trains is not enough for NN-Liuzhou based on demand during the CNY period. I don't know about the slow trains; my friends prefer buses to them (faster and always easy to buy tickets).

Regarding Beihai, I don't know anyone in Nanning who is from there.

No public primary school days from Jan 18 - Feb 16.
Fireworks go on sale a week before CNY eve and end on Lantern festival Feb 14

This year the pork prices have declined before CNY, a first since 2009 !. Some say it's due to no 'lavish' government meat dish plates...

BTW; In 2015 CNY is on Feb. 19th, after the NFL super bowl !, & its in warm Arizona, NOT cold Jersey..
Fourty days of vacation???

I have to chime in that when you're dealing with project management on construction sites, it sure seems like your labor force is gone for 40 days. Well, not completely absent, but there is a 6-week period every year where scheduling to get anything accomplished is a nightmare. Far more disruptive than office-based/white collar jobs.

Most Chinese like to go to their home towns for CNY (it bit like Americans and Thanksgiving). But, Sanya seems to be a popular travel destination (I wouldn't dream of going there during CNY myself).

It's just that I read that scores of Chinese are canceling their Thailand vacation because of the unrest. Thought that must be a popular destination for CNY.

Yesterday, we took our flights out of China for the CNY.

Must give kudos to the airport staff at both WNZ and PVG. All the customs lines were OPEN, all screeners were OPEN, all immigration lines were OPEN.

It wasn't as bad as we had expected. Lines went very fast and very smooth.
Our immigration line was very long but the actual wait was less than 5 minutes.

We had to wait for a takeoff spot because our plane was late and missed its scheduled slot but it was no big deal.

So glad you asked. That 40 days are called Chunyun (春運 or "Spring Festival travel season/rush").

Chunyun is not the same as Spring Festival (春節).

"...the Chunyun period, is a period of travel in China with extremely high traffic load around the time of the Chinese New Year. The period usually begins 15 days before the Lunar New Year's Day and lasts for around 40 days. "

Looking at the pix, it seems like madness to travel during Chunyun. Any other places outside mainland China that receive spillover from these crowds? I assume Hongkong is crazy as well during Chunyun? Taiwan?
