My guess is that the majority are connecting pax.
How much are you usually getting this flight for? I'm looking on ctrip and it's ranging from 400CNY to like 800CNY depending on the day

that's pretty standard for monopoly short haul routes. Ningbo shanghai is about the same.

Emmm...I only happen to know its existence but never took it as I used to live somewhere in between PVG and NKG, so it would make no sense to me.

Given the alternatives (in terms of frequency, speed, price and etc) between Shanghai and Nanjing (3 railways, multiple motorways), even 400CNY is quite a lot. The only point I can see is that it can beat the road traffic during peak holiday travel period. Otherwise airport bus + HSR would be the winner for me.

Yea, I usually take the HSR. I don't think the 1st class is worth it though, there's not much difference

I value a sort of tranquil atmosphere quite high when travelling. And with several hundred train trip experiences in China, I've come to the conclusion that 1st is my thing at least in the Middle Kingdom.

Meeting family friends at Nanjingnan and then it's off to our annual celebrations in southern, rural Nanjing.

Nanjing is building a lot of metro lines.
Which metro line goes to Gaochun? Was it number 6?
And will you be able to use it when Horse Year ends?

I'm normally taking a car/taxi or bus from Nanjingnan. Nowadays could also switch to another HSR line for 1-2 stops.

What I'm really looking forward to is the rail connection from Nanjingan to NKG. I'll probably switch all my international flights to and from China there once that line is operational.

I'm looking forward to this as well. I read about this a few days ago

Meaning Jiangning and Jurong West respectively.
But these are poorly served. 9 trains daily Nanjing South-Jiangning, and 4 trains Nanjing South-Jurong West. The total of the line is 49 daily trains Nanjing South - Hangzhou.

Greetings from Nanning... again. I'm trying my best to get out of this place for CNY, but getting a train ticket to Hanoi is turning out to be an enormous hassle. The kiosks near me don't sell international tickets, so I'm hoping Ctrip will come through for me (I put a call into them, and they are going to get back to me). While I could take a bus (3 hours faster, actually), our new digs in Nanning happen to be pretty close to the train station... and on the opposite side of town from the long distance bus station. I already scored a visa, btw (that was super easy, but also kind of expensive); I really wish the US could get on board with this APEC card thing.

But it is new year in Vietnam, too.

I realize this, but I still don't want to spend CNY in China. One of my Beijing bar buddies lives in Hanoi and invited me to visit her.

Incidentally, Ctrip called me back and informed me that they can't sell tickets to Hanoi, and even if they could, that the trains are sold out on Wednesday, so it looks like I'll be taking a bus.

ETA: I just grabbed a train ticket to Fangchenggang on D8251 via Ctrip (they charged me an extra Y20 this time and I didn't bother to figure a workaround because it was still really cheap). Remarkably, it's only a 1.25 hour train ride (v. 4 hours to Pingxiang). I don't have an exact plan on how to get from there to Hanoi yet, but I'm figuring that will entail two bus rides.

Yes, because of the Guangxi Coastal Railway that opened.
Which is remarkable for being a high speed line having only 1 train daily each branch. Nanning-Fangchenggang takes 1:15 for 159 km, but the only train leaves 12:30, arrives Fangchenggang 13:45 - then returns 14:21 and is back at 15:36. Nanning-Beihai, 208 km, takes 1:35 - but it departs 14:55, arrives 16:30, then returns 18:58 and is back at 20:31.
What is the use of this kind of "service"? No way to make a day trip to Fanchenggang...

Having never been to Fangchenggang, I can't comment on whether or not day trips would be desirable, but I do think this HSR stuff is really great for Nanning. We now have Guilin (sort of connected to Changsha), Liuzhou, and this coastal route. Guangzhou is going to be a HUGE game changer because it will afford easy movement between the PRD and this place, which is still effectively an island. Basically, Nanning is nicer than Shenzhen, it is far cheaper than Shenzhen, and it happens to be China's gateway to SE Asia (with Beijing's complete support). As soon as it gets connected, watch out!
