I'm under the gun trying to wrap things up in the USA and get back to China, so I just don't have any spare brain power to deal with this until I'm back in Beijing next week. Anyone who will be around and is interested, just save the date, probably the 9th. If we can't agree on a dinner restaurant it's no big deal, we can meet up for drinks/snacks somewhere and then people can split off according to their palate and budget preferences.
Frankly, it's hard for me to decide 2 weeks in advance, what I want for dinner. (but I'm sure it won't be German!

Hey, all. Regrettably, as the OP, I am sad to say that I am unlikely to make it back to BJ by the 9th, because I'm behind schedule on my US trip (e.g. those 3 days in the Bay Area are now likely to be 7, and I still need to visit several other cities on the east coast before making my way to China).
As of now, it looks like the 11th is a reasonably safe bet, assuming I can a semi-sane airplane ticket. That having been said, I encourage you guys to carry on in my absence.

Jiejie: looks like you should pick the place as you will be back in Beijing. Now that the majority of us who will be attending have vetoed German food, how about Chinese? Does any place serve dim sum for dinner?

I don't find there are that many great dim sum places in Beijing period (Hong Kongers generally agree), and most of those are best for lunch/brunch (esp weekends). So...dim sum likely won't be on the dinner menu. Let me get back and see what's what.

I know it's kind of touristy, but bob and I would be up for having duck. it appears there's only going to be 4-6 people meeting at the most, so if we go to dinner somewhere we can all sit around one big table that would be fun. Is Chinese food usually served family style, like it is here in the US?

I have a work meeting on the sunday -- time yet tbd. If it finishes reasonably early (given that I'm in haidian), I would be up for meeting and having dinner with fellow FTers.
I'm also on a modest budget now that I'm on a chinese academic salary. Open to most cuisines. However, I'm teetotal, so oktoberfest has little attraction for me personally, but happy for others to enjoy.

JieJie, My 'translater' is also not keen on the food there, but maybe you can split a plate of the 'special' food... and she also drinks mostly hot water... so;
Also, on the beer, Mnfox has a silent auction bid in on the Krypto medallion tag, & the proceeds go to the the first round of drinks...
After living in Haidian for 7 months, I want some 'BJ east' western type food ! & October-fest beer !.
Not pigeon soup, hairy crab, bony chicken, salamander fish, & overcooked vegies....

Doe this plan make sense to those of you in Beijing:
We meet at Paulaner beer garden on Sunday Oct. 9 @ 6:00pm, for a beer or libation with Jiatong. Then those of us who want to have dinner walk as a group somewhere in that neighborhood to a Chinese restaurant that looks good, or someone knows about, or the concierge at the Kempinski can recommend. It appears this is an easy place to get to by subway, even for me easy to find. Is this a good neighborhood to find decent local restaurants? Is 7:00 a good time to have dinner in Beijing?
From reading back, those who have expressed an interest in meeting up are
Jiatong, Jiejie, trueblu, and me and my DH Bob.
What do you all think? Anyone else coming?

I know susie and DH will be leaving on the 11th (?) but if anybody is still around, we could have a second mini-do to celebrate moondog's return.

Pig's ear
Chicken feet
Cow's stomach
Cow's lung
Pickled loach
Black fungus
Thousand year old egg
Duck head
Duck tongue
Pig brain
Pig blood - related forms
and quite a few more....
This is pretty much standard fare. Not the truely bizarre.. cat, dog, donkey, snake, etc.
Best to have a knowledgeable host, flowing supply of good beer (not Yanjing),
decent baijiu, and a no smoke environment.

We're not leaving Beijing for Guilin until Oct. 12, early morning flight. I don't want to be out late the night prior since we'll have to get up very early to get to PEK for a 7:30am flight. I'm guessing we'll need to be out of the hotel at 5:30 am, giving an hour to get to PEK via taxi and an hour before the flight. Or are the roads better at that time of day?
