I'll probably be there the week of the 17th. The 24th is my birthday, so I am hoping to be outside of China then.

For BJ, how does Paulaner on 10/9 sound to you guys? It's near line 10 and Oktoberfest should be in full swing.

I despise Paulaner's food but if I'm the odd person out, all of you enjoy. I could drop by for a beer at the beginning or end. October 9 is OK, I am flexible.

I was thinking more along the lines of Chinese food, and nothing too expensive. And nothing hotel-based.

Oktoberfest is strangely fun there... worth the high prices, IMO.

JieJie, My 'translater' is also not keen on the food there, but maybe you can split a plate of the 'special' food... and she also drinks mostly hot water... so;

Also, on the beer, Mnfox has a silent auction bid in on the Krypto medallion tag, & the proceeds go to the the first round of drinks...

After living in Haidian for 7 months, I want some 'BJ east' western type food ! & October-fest beer !.
Not pigeon soup, hairy crab, bony chicken, salamander fish, & overcooked vegies....

German food in China, who'd a thought

I'm with Jiejie on having Chinese food. A local place, not too fancy, good food, not too pricey. I don't want to blow my food budget on the first night. Is Paulaner the king of place you can go to for a beer first, then walk somewhere else for dinner?

I can certainly suggest places that fit that description. For me, it's not an option--at this time I just can't afford to spend RMB 200 on dinner, plus drinks. I would think if Paulaner's outside tables are set up for Octoberfest, we should be able to start off together with a beer, then those who want to stay to eat German can, and the rest of us can go for local Chinese. Alternate suggestions, anyone?

Jiejie's suggestion works for me. If some of you who live in Beijing don't want Chinese food, how about compromising with Japanese or Korean? I'm not overly fond of German food and I don't drink beer. I took a look at the menu-200 RMB for one dinnner is duoshao gui (a bit pricey).

Well, there is a Sorobol in Yansha (same building as Paulaner), so that would be a logical choice. It isn't a lot cheaper than Paulaner, but I suppose it's easy to control costs by ordering modestly (dozens of miniature dishes are sort of on the house -- "sort of" because they don't just hand them out to random passers by).

A few other ideas not especially close to Paulaner or Line 10: Purple Haze (Thai; good value), Xiao Wangfu -- Guanghua Lu (jiejie dislikes it, but it's an old staple for reasonably priced group outings), I would endorse Blue Frog on Monday night (burger night), Traktir or Traktir Pushkin (passable Russian food; good for groups; worth trying once), the Xinjiang Place in Houhai. That's all I can think of for now. There aren't many reasonably priced restaurants in Beijing that I really love right now, but the above are well suited for groups.

If Xiao Wang Fu is a candidate, the one in Ritan Park is better than the one at Guanghua Lu, especially on a Sunday. I think in the same Ritan Park area, Xiheyaju is even better. But in the general Paulaner area, there is Feitangyuxiang (Sichuan) and Xiang Man Lou which is about a 15-20 minute pleasant walk. The latter is well priced and even has good cheap duck. (Not that I need duck, but I'm open). There's another local place the Black Horse (I think) that is nearby and has pretty good homestyle dishes. And one (whose name I forget) in Xinyuanli neighborhood that's also good, about 15-20 minutes walk NW from Paulaner.

I'll work on some western ideas tomorrow--what about italian? No, not pizza hut
Indian food?

I cannot eat Indian food-it does not agree with me. Italian would be okay, although we eat it all the time here in the US. As long as there is a non spicy (bu la) option at one of the Chinese restaurants I defer to you locals.

Who else will be staying at the Cap Ren hotel? We could all go together in a cab, right?
