Clearly, it is from microwaving their shirts with the epaulets on them.

(the TSOs that read the IdeaFactory should get a chuckle out of that~)

Now, that is true, there. The pants are crap. Not only does the seam-stripe bunch up, but it also isn't held onto the fabric in a very sturdy manner. After a few more washes, the thing actually starts to rip apart off of the pant leg. The only reason it's there at all is to force the TSOs to use the VF Solutions pants, rather than going to Wal-Mart and buying a pair of Dockers™ to wear. About 80% of the HSV workforce did that, because those pants were just plain better than the crap they issued us. Still, nobody here in HSV has made any claims of irritation caused by the shirts themselves.

This is a problem because TSA workers are only given a limited allowance to buy uniforms.
$50, by the way, this year.

Bureau of Prisons employees get $400 a year.

Yeah. :/ I think the most we've ever gotten was $150. But, yeah, this year it was only $50.

Enough for me to order a pair of pants, and, like, four pairs of socks. The socks really are great, but expensive.

And every dime of that went to new uniforms, I swear.

It's not the uniform, it's the job. Their souls are escaping through their pores.

Washington Post Article

The best part:
We've heard a very strong reaction from passengers. They like the look. It looks much more professional."

Unlike the old uniforms, White added, the new ones come with "a real gold badge."

And you've gotta love:
A spokesman for TSA said that the problem is not serious or widespread, and that few workers have complained.
"So far, a handful of officers have reported minor irritations," said Christopher White, a TSA spokesman.
<snip>
Peter Winch, an AFGE national organizer ..., estimated that between 200 and 300 workers complained about the new uniforms.
3 oz, or 3.4? All that hard math is making someone's head hurt.

Chemistry's tough, too. As this agency thinks water and flip-flops are explosive, I'm gonna take this statement with a grain of salt, too:
The agency said that tests done on the uniforms have not found unacceptable levels of formaldehyde or any other chemical.

The only TSOs I know that had issues with the pants were stretching the fabiric to the max anyways. The shirts wont last for long, mine are faded on the pockets and collars from ironing. I am pretty pissed about the out of country purchase contracts. What happened to buy american?

Shouldn't the clothing be seized at the port of entry as a biological hazard?

Thats the problem with government contracts. You end up with the best quality product from the lowest bidder.

You actually iron them?!

I just try to pull mine outta the dryer really fast, and get them hung up before they wrinkle. On the days I don't quite make it ... well, those are "sweater vest days!"

It's only fair

Why shouldn't the new uniforms cause the employees a painful rash?

After all, they've caused me to suffer a big pain in the butt whenever I travel!

Seriously! If you iron them too much (a la 'every time you wash and dry them') eventually you'll start seeing the material around the seams pale out to a cloudy white. We have a LTSO here in HSV who, when we had the white shirts, was the sharpest lookin' one in the whole bunch. Now, her shirt looks all... weird. And tacky. Along every edge, every seam of the shirt (over the pockets, around the sleeves, over the shoulders, etc) there's a strip of cloudy white that just makes it look like her uniform is filthy.

She's not pleased.

Kippie proves he can spend TSA money very well.

Unfortunately, he can't prove that he gets any value for what he spends. Glad he bought these well-made uniforms instead of spending it on better training or technology.
