Last year, I had a woman at the PreCheck line Fort Lauderdale go crazy because I had a mobile boarding pass. She had no idea what to do as I passed through the metal detector.
It was her own plunge into cognitive dissonance: "He must carry his boarding pass in his hand, but his boarding pass must also go through the x-ray machine." Her brain went haywire, and then she gave up with a dramatic sigh.
That was the same day that I watched another TSA woman scream at an elderly, hearing-impaired wheelchair. She was frisking and swabbing this woman endlessly. The TSA woman said, "We're checking to see if you have a bomb." The elderly woman exclaimed, "A bomb?" (very loudly) "Why would I have a bomb?" In another moment of questionable logic, the TSA woman said, "That's why we're here."

Reminds me of the time I was going through a small town airport and the guy asked if he could check my suspenders. I said, "Sure, why not.". So he ran his fingers around my waistband, made a big show about checking the ends of the suspenders (they were clipons with metal clips.).
They made such a big show of it, they failed to notice the big tube of toothpaste, a bottle of soap and a big bottle of shampoo, all sitting in my carryon not bagged, and certainly larger than 3.4oz each.

At the Pre-check line at FLL this morning, the doc checker is scribbling something on boarding passes and the dragon manning the metal detector is screaming at people "Keep your boarding pass OUT as you come to the metal detector! If your boarding pass is on your phone, tell me."
Not wanting to take any chances, I put my scribbled on boarding pass in my pocket and told her I had a mobile boarding pass. She waved me through without even asking to look at it.
Security theater at its finest.

Same thing happened to me March 8th @ FLL . I too heard him barking ,rudely too, have your boarding passes out. Yet the other one was telling everytone to have everything out of your pockets.
I put my phone with the mobile BP on it through the scanner, and was never asked for the BP .
Typical TSA inconsistencies, some airports want the BP after the WMD,some don't.

last week at JFK T7 departures, we were told to keep boarding pass in hand when going through security screening....
On a general note, I prefer keeping my passport with me when going through security rather than leaving it in my jacket/carry-on, etc.
Some airports in Europe (such as VIE) want to also have passports go through the x-ray scanners.....weird

US/AA at MCI (where each group of gates has its own checkpoint) is Pre-lite, where you can leave shoes on and use the WTMD but have to take laptops/liquids out of your carry-on. They mark it by scribbling the BP with yellow highlighter and require you to keep it visible the whole time; if you use mobile BP, they give you a pink card that you have to keep visible at all times until you're through.
