I admire anyone who stands up for their rights and who does opt out, but I am furious that TSA seems to be incapable of distinguishing between those who make a choice and those who are unable to make a choice.

I also feel that collecting data such as age, reason, etc is wrong. If someone says that they cannot use the machine, they cannot use the machine.
I don't know if that distinction is made between involuntary "opt-outs" versus voluntary opt-outs. I know that "privacy" was ultimately checked for the reason, but I was in a bit of a hurry and didn't get a chance to see what exactly the form said. No information was collected from me other than my reason.

For backscatter machines, I will state safety as the primary reason. For MMW (and backscatter too), it's privacy.

The person wearing that shirt would be required to go to the private room for the enhanced screening and may be in for quite a surprise as to what goes on with that search compared to the enhanced screening in public. Because in private you are asked to remove things and prove to the TSA Agent that you aren't concealing a dangerous item.

I would still prefer to be screened in public.

IOW, the TSA engages in strip searching people.

Well the second statement on this sight says that a private screening should be offered if clothing needs to be lifted.

http://www.tsa.gov/travelers/airtrav...rial_1567.shtm

Now think about a a skirt that is to tight and can't be lifted up but the person has been singled out for a enhanced patdown because they are wearing that tight skirt. The only way to screen that person in the tight skirt is for them to remove the skirt.

Now there was a comment somewhere that they would allow you to change your clothes for the enhanced patdown. I don't see that happening once the screening process starts.

Disability?

Can the Americans With Disabilities Act provide any help for dealing with tsa?

Seems like it should help but I am unfamiliar with it.
Don't they need to make reasonable accomodations with screening process?

make me sick.

My opt out story from yesterday. Was flying out of T4 B at PHX to EWR. Arrived at CP around 3pm, CP was pretty much empty except maybe of us. No issues at the TDC, went over to the belt and put my belongings in bins, they had the WTMD and NoS both running. The TSO asked me if I had a belt on (i didnt) and asked me to step over into the NoS. I said "i would like to opt out". He was kinda like 'oook' "we've got a male opt out on 2". I waited maybe 3-4 min or so for another TSO to come escort me to the screening area, he asked me which belongings were mine on the conveyor belt. He grabbed them and took them over to the screening area and told me to stand on the mat facing my belongings. He thoroughly described what he would be doing during the patdown. Overall it wasnt super invasive, quick run around the waistband and no fondling of my testicular or penile region. I could tell he was uncomfortable doing the patdown and seemed put off by me opting out (i surmised this by his initial comment to another TSO "oh another opt out now?") He swabbed his gloves after he patted me down, and then told me I was on my way. It took about a total of 5 min. Will have a return report on JFK in the morning

Only if "having a sense of dignity" is declared a disability - which is entirely possible, given the nature of the programs coming from DHS and TSA.

DVR Eyeglasses

Regardless if Eyeglasses are left on or removed DVR eyeglasses would be very helpful to document experiences at tsa checkpoints. There are several kinds including one with removable sunglass frames with clear frames. It works for both sound and video and can easily be located thru your favorite SEARCH engine.

Today at ORD I was asked to go through the NOS. I said no. What? I opted out and the guy started getting just a touch belligerent. I waited a few minutes and the official groper showed up. This TSA fellow said all the right things and did all of the right moves except he did not touch my junk.

In the mean time a lady had to go through the NOS and was groped anyway. She didn't look very happy about it. While she was gathering her things I told her she should actually be pleased. They only send pretty ladies through that thing. That made her smile.

She was still smiling when I passed her at a gate 20 minutes later.

Self-Opted Out at Dulles & Left a Don'tScanMe Brochure Behind

Flew out of Dulles on Sunday afternoon right before the nightly primetime. As is my practice, I checked out the Black Diamond lane in the baggage claim level. There were only a few people in line, including a lot of people in wheelchairs.

It's pretty easy to conduct surveillance of the Black Diamond lane by standing across the hallway in front of the lane and pretending to be looking at a Blackberry or listening to voicemails. I ascertained that the NoS wasn't operating, so, I entered the line.

While I was waiting for Blacklight Bob to do his thing, a new screener showed up and, guess what? -- they cranked up the NoS. They had plenty of sheeple, including some international guest in Arabic dress and several people headed on a Christian mission trip (all wearing the same teeshirts). So, it wasn't hard to time things to go through the metal detector.

I had time to print just one brochure. I placed it in my laptop case right underneath the laptop. It was easy to grab both the laptop and the brochure and place both in the laptop-only bin, with the brochure underneath the laptop. When I retrieved my laptop, it was pretty easy to place another bin inside the now (almost) empty laptop bin. So, whoever used my bin on the next pass had the opportunity to take and read the brochure.

FYI, the voyeur booth is about 10' away from the NoS right behind the x-ray rollers. It was easy to see a blue shadow inside while retrieving my stuff and leaving the brochure behind. Next time, I will see if I can do something like lean up against the booth to do something like put my shoes back on.

I had to go pretty close to the main checkpoint and thought I would check it out to see if I could find the voyeur booths. I'm not sure, but I think they are next to the bulletproof glass-encased nerve center behind the ID checker desks. There's got to be more of them because the suspected location couldn't possibly hold one voyeur per NoS.

Dulles can be handled, but you have to be careful.

This article showed up 1/8/11 in the Toronto Sun and papers throughout Canada. Apparently the author is a regular contributor since I found the same article in three other papers, including Montreal and Vancouver. There were also a number of other articles on various topics from this same physician.

Anyway she strongly advises avoiding the cancer boxes so hopefully this message will work its way south. I plan to save the link and post at other forums such as USA Today, etc.

Very that you avoided the NoS but does that mean no one found the (Vaseline) oozy band-aid?

(And BTW, that's gotta be #1 in "things I never thought I'd say on the interwebs...")

I did an SDPOO at PIT main checkpoint this morning. One back-scatter was running, in the center lane, so I went to the right most WTMD and got no strip search or sexual assault.

Security theater has been taking 3 to 4 times as long as before they hit the strip search cancer boxes.
