Columbus International
Concourse B security
My wife is deaf. I am not.
We were taking a flight to New Orleans through Houston.
I explained to her ahead of time about the backscatter machine, what it did, and that she could opt out. She indicated that she would want to opt out and take the pat down....

(1) Opt out.
(2) No private screenings (it's better to have witnesses, plus it can be an opportunity to educate others)
(3) Don't walk through a nude-o-scope under any circumstances (originally this suggestion was to minimize incidental radiation, but as is apparent from this example, TSA simply can't be tusted)

Thanks Mike & RG,
Australia is a fabulous country. We keep coming back. Good news about BNEhaving no WBI. Last time we went through BNE to LAX there were two levels of security, with the second being no doubt TSA compliant - but conducted in a courteous and professional manner.
We also just flew domestic BNE-CNS. No laptop out. No belts or shoes off. No Kippy bag. This brought back fond memories of pre-TSA.

I just ran across this. Were it nly true...
The Israelis are developing an airport security device that eliminates the privacy concerns that come with full-body scanners.
It’s a booth you step into with all of your luggage. It will not X-ray you. Instead, it will detonate any explosive device you may with you. They see this as a win-win for everyone, with none of this crap about racial profiling. It also would eliminate the costs of a long and expensive trial. Justice would be swift. Case closed!
Picture this -- You're in the airport terminal and you hear a muffled explosion. Shortly thereafter an announcement comes over the PA system . . . "Attention standby passengers — we now have a seat available on flight number 369 to Brussels. Shalom!"

. Male TSO in the next (WBI) line directs my much too cute for her own good sixteen year old daughter to the NOS line. Female TSO then condescendly says to her, "Sweetie, just step right over here (the WBI)..." and begins to give her directions. Well trained daughter responds with "I am opting out!"

Opt out at RIC
Spouse and I both chose to opt out this morning at RIC. TSO #1 directed me towards the unsigned NOS without informing me as to what it was. TSO #1 told me to stand aside when I opted out. He loudly yelled out "another opt out". My husband was then directed to the NOS and opted out. He was told to stand beside me. TSO#2 then told TSO #1 that there was not enough room and that my husband should go back and stand on the other side of the magnetometer. Waited about 1 minute for female assist. Have to admit she was respectful. Changed gloves without being asked and patted me down in a professional manner. My husband noticed that they were patting down just about everyone who came through the NOS. What a waste of time.

Now this could be problematic ... my "too cute for her own good" 14 yr old daughter regularly flies by herself. She has friends in various countries and is responsible enough to fly on her own. I haven't really thought twice about it before, but lemme tell ya ... if she gets any sort of TSA treatment without me there to intervene ... all mamma bear instincts kick in. I think like all parents, I would go to prison over having my child kiddy-porned, secondary searched, patted down or any such treatment without my supervision and control.
