Please record data points in a structured form in this wiki (in addition to posting to the thread):

Date of the offer [mm/dd/yyyy], the offer, how long you had the card and yearly spend)

__________________________________________________ _____________
Tips:

When you call, you MUST ask if there are any offers on your account. Don't ask for an AF waiver, ask if they can credit your account the $95 (or whatever your AF is) to your account. They cannot remove the AF, but they can credit an amount to offset it. If you cancel your card within 30 days of receiving retention bonus, then Chase may claw back that bonus Note that Chase has shortened the period in which you can close the card and get the fee refunded. It is 30 days for most (or all?) cards.

If you don't get a retention bonus, the card you are holding may have the option of a downgrade. Cards that are downgraded may be upgraded at a later date. For example a no-fee Sapphire product exists for downgrade which is not available to new applicants. Consolidated discussion of that topic is here: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase...16-onward.html

If you have Ultimate Rewards points in the account you're calling about, try transferring them to another account before calling. For example, if you will ask for a retention on your Sapphire card, transfer the points to your Freedom card in advance.

Have had the CSR since the beginning and large spend particularly pre-COVID. No retention offer. She offered downgrading to a no fee card but I decided to go with the CSP even though I could have reapplied later and received the bonus. I use personal rental cars quite a bit and appreciate the primary insurance on rentals.

02/14/2022, United Explorer card, they offered $60 statement credit against the $95 AF, then a downgrade to the Gateway card. I've had the card for 4 years with a yearly spend of about $5K. Closed.

Chase British Airways Visa Signature. Had the card for two years w/ annual spend c. $50,000. Never received any retention offers and have paid the annual fee each renewal. The annual fee ($95) posted two weeks ago and I just called to cancel. No effort to keep me. I did ask if there was a retention offer and was simply told 'no'. I closed the card and am trying the new Capital One Venture X. At the end of the call, the Chase rep. told me that I had only 30 days to spend the Avios that I earned through the card, but surely this cannot be correct.

It is not. If you had Chase Ultimate Rewards points which you had not redeemed or moved it could be accurate, but Avios are already in your BAEC account.

No retention offer on the CSR. Had it since its inception, but have spent minimally on it since the pandemic. I did receive a $250 credit last year.

Haven't decided yet, but I'm leaning towards keeping it as I still have a UR points balance of 300k. Gotta decide if I use 36.5k points to offset the annual fee or I'm better off transferring it to some partner for redemption within the year.

Called today 2/18/22 for offer on my CSR--no retention offer. Have had card since January 2017.

Options to downgrade to Sapphire, Sapphire Preferred, Slate, Freedom Unlimited, Freedom Unlimited (non-Visa Signature), and Freedom Flex

Opting to downgrade to Freedom Flex...a 3rd Freedom card to take advantage of the quarterly bonus categories--sometimes comes in very handy!

$95 annual fee just posted. Called for to see about retention offer and agent just went ahead and cancelled without any attempt to save account. I've had this card since it was introduced many years ago.
Good riddance.

CSR:

Had since 2/1/17. Nothing. Transferred all my points to my husband. Need to decide do I close and allocate the credit to my Hyatt card (ironically 5X on dining right now) or downgrade to something? Gotta decide tomorrow 😂

Freedom Unlimited, Freedom Unlimited (non-Visa Signature), and Freedom Flex. If I pick one of those 3, I’d still be eligible for CSP in the future I think?

Not sure what this means, or why it would be important, but our Freedom Unlimited card is a VISA Signature.
