This thread covers how to use Ultimate Reward Points for booking all types of travel via the Ultimate Rewards portal.

1) How do I book a ticket? Choose my airfare class?
Login to ultimaterewards.com
Click: Use points > Explore and Book Travel
Click the button that defaults to [1 Traveler, All]
Change "Class" (the first entry in the pull-down) from All to Business
Click: Close

2) How far in advance can I book?
In mid-November 2017 it was reported that airline reservations are available only 270 days in advance. Read HERE.

3) How do I book hotels?
Follow the steps above to log on. There are standard looking search engines offered for airfare, hotel, etc at that point.

4) How do I get the better redemption rate offered on some Chase cards?
The upper left corner of the UR page will show you which card you are logged in with. If you hold a Chase Sapphire Reserve card, you will be shown a better price on points bookings, as a 1.5 redemption rate is offered as one of the benefits of this card. If you log in to the UR portal from a different UR card, such as the Ink, you will not be offered this rate.

5) Where else can I find information?

This thread is a consolidated resource which covers topics including:

Fare buckets, here
Price differences between open market air fares and UR bookings, here
Selecting seat classes
Using cash and points to pay for tickets

and more.

I've seen it work both ways as well. The confirmation number that Chase provides in the confirmation email is the same as the National one, just remove the letters on the end. My wife has one coming up that's like 123456789COUNT. The National confermation number is just 123456789.

Thanks for the tip on confirmation numbers. I put the UR number in the National site, and it showed up.

Ultimate Rewards last minute booking nightmare

Booked a last minute hotel using ultimate rewards (Atlantis Bahamas) on Tuesday evening since wasn't sure flights on Wednesday were going to operate. Flights operated thankfully and arrived Nassau just fine.

Arrived Atlantis resort - several in line and process there isn't the quickest. Agent is doing lots and lots of typing - yes I've stayed here many times before but for some reason can't find any reservation. They summon supervisor who agrees that reservation isn't in system despite printout we have in hand from Ultimate Rewards.

Phone Ultimate Rewards (by way of Sapphire Preferred phone line) who apologizes and says a specialist is the only person who can assist, but given hurricane it could be a while. I asked what a while meant and she estimated a half hour. Spent well over that on hold.

Specialist immediately apologizes and says please hold while we contact resort. This took well over another half hour (on hold on an international call) and line eventually disconnects. To the credit of the Atlantis employees one of them emerged from the back looking for us by name saying Chase was on the phone. Same specialist eventually called back stating everything should be good to go. Asked what happened and short explanation is resort wasn't taking reservations because of hurricane but had resumed the morning after we booked and something went wrong. Hard to imagine website would just take a reservation for a property that isn't accepting new reservations.

I asked for reasonable reimbursement for international phone costs (we used a T-Mobile line at a quarter per minute and not $1.79 Verizon) along with over two hours of our time lost. "Specialist" offers 2,500 points...I said thats ok I'll just have to write in. She offers a counteroffer of 5,000. Said the same thing and disconnected line.

What do you find fair in this situation? We spent over two hours standing to the side of the front desk on the phone trying to get this fixed. This created not only a decently priced phone bill but also ~$100 in additional expenditures. The desk giving out waterpark wristbands had since closed and the only way to get one for that afternoon/evening was to purchase one.

Hilton Data Point

I booked a room at a Hilton Garden Inn in Portland, Maine a week ago using UR pts. I called the hotel today and they had my rez. in their system. She explained that I would get Hilton Gold benefits (breakfast, possible upgrade and stay credit) but no Hilton pts. I assumed that would be the case so was OK. I then asked for a possible room u/g and she said, "sure, we can give you a full water view room instead of a partial". Never hurts to ask.

UR website does NOT book your hotel. The info is sent to whoever the provider they used to book your room. In many cases it is Expedia. Then the provider would send your booking details to the hotel. So the confirmation you see on UR website is NOT an instant, real confirmation. There are reported cases before that when Expedia finally sent the reservation to the hotel (in this case it was a Marriott airport hotel) the property was already full and not taking any new reservation. But that never communicating back to the customer who at arrival, found NO ROOM was booked for him at all. Marriott was kind enough to refer him to another property which he either shelled out the taxi fare to go or back to the airport to take the other hotel's shuttle. IIRC the poster (on another website in the comment section) got full points refund from Chase.
However there is a DP in this very thread someone booked 4 nights and only the 1st night was there. He had to scramble in the area to find room for the rest of their stay. The only thing he could wrestle out from UR was 10K and the reps were nasty - at first denied the first rep has promised anything and later very rude to tell the customer to take it or leave it for the 10K.

So, it is up to your skill to get whatever you feel you are deserved. After all you are not being walked like the Marriott case, nor you lost the rest of your nights, so 5K might be the cap the rep was willing to give (or limited to give). Personally I got a totally fouled up reservation when the property refused to acknowledge the reservation and changed the refund policy. All I got back was a full refund. I dont have time and energy to deal with Connexion - the front line reps are all powerless, only the "specialists" have ability to contact the vendors directly and find out what is going on.

So I went to the UR portal to see if I could get that price, and it actually showed $1,033! I cancelled my original booking, and once the points were back in my account, I rebooked to this price.

I just checked my receipts to compare, and it appears that the original booking charged $218 in taxes, while the new booking did not charge any taxes. Should I be concerned about this? Will the hotel charge my card that amount when I arrive?
Anyone have any experience with the above?

The price quoted on UR's rental car, is that the total or just based price? Will I be charged for tax / fees at pickup?

You will not be charged by the rental company unless you take upgrades when picking up the car, or if they need to add gas. Price quoted by UR is the total price.

Any recent DP's on how to avoid buying bulk tickets when booking United flights?

If I do happen to get a bulk ticket, what are the options for converting it to a ticket that earns PQD & PQM?

Cancel your ticket in the 24 hours allowed and repurchase from UA.

Isn't Virgin Atlantic bookable on the Chase portal? I have a trip to LHR coming up and was thinking of using CSR points instead and their flights aren't coming up. I also can't get business class fares on Delta to come up, the only flight on Delta that comes up is the non-stop (they have quite a few options from Detroit to LHR but requires a layover and none of those flights are coming up on the portal) with an E fare class. I know I have enough points to cover a business class ticket. I'm also up for flying BA and connecting in Chicago but again only coach fares come up.

Hotel reservation before card was cancelled

I have CSR and Chase Ink Business card. What would happen if I make a hotel reservation with the CSR and then cancel the card and then later cancel the hotel reservation? Will I lose the points or will they refund back into my Ultimate Rewards account still active by my Chase Ink card? I hope this makes sense.

Missing Hotels on Chase Ultimate Rewards

Has anyone else experienced this? I am trying to book hotels in Hoi An, Vietnam next year. My friend successfully booked her hotel in Hoi An last year. I have seen Hoi An hotels pop up in the search before, but now they are gone. The closest hotel is 16 miles south of Hoi An.

The sight only shows a portion of available hotels, activities & flights. That's just the way it is.

I booked a hotel room at a Best Western through the Chase travel portal using UR points. When I checked out, the receipt from the hotel showed that it was paid by Amex.

Was this a mistake on their part, or does Chase actually use Amex to make certain travel bookings?
