In the case of the former, China was able to get individual states (e.g. France, Germany, Netherlands) to deal with it on a bilateral basis. Plus, you have the BNR flights, which are presumably subsidized on both ends (e.g. from China and Hungary). The short of it is that Chinese airlines have blanketed the continent at will, and European carriers have been a hard time competing. Personally, I have no problem with that; if China wants people to visit and/or its airlines want to put their planes to better use than flying back and forth between Beijing and Shanghai, more the power to them.

The US, on the other hand, has been highly protectionistic about its bilateral air services agreement with China ever since the 5 ones were retired. So, on the Chinese side, you have 50 slot pairs spread among ~7 airlines. As long as they can reap handsome profits by flying to LAX, that's the way they're going to play it.

Hong Kong is not covered by the bilateral, so CX could theoretically launch more interesting routes, and even overlfy Russia (like it does with its JFK flights), but that doing so would entail poking a lot of bears that are currently at peace (sort of). I must say that I'm impressed by the DFW move, though. I doubt that one will overfly Russia, and AA is presumably giving it some political cover anyway. The checkmate to JX angle didn't even occur to me until you guys brought it up...makes sense.

The return flight from DFW to HKG might need to overfly Russia

Maybe they will come back after CX solves its aircraft shortage...

European routes can be hard to do since ME3's lower cost base makes it hard to capture transfer traffic.

.

The competition from Me3 and TK has become harder on CX for European routes. Those mostly flew the South route because of the ME location.
With the Ukraine war, CX has to fly south rather than North, while the ME3 lose much less time/fuel to adapt their routes.
That is a competitive disadvantage for CX.

So I doubt Florida Republicans will have an issue

Not confident the British card will always be enough in the current environment; the current status of some Republican attitudes in the US is anything and everything linked to China in any way is evil. They had the head of the American Chamber of Commerce in HK in their crosshairs just for doing his job and promoting business there. Cathay has been lucky to escape this crackdown so far.

The new HKG/DFW is finally showing up on Expedia. When I checked the other day, it would only show on the CX website.

Looking to book Hong Kong - Toronto on Cathy J for 2 people for next October. When it comes to reward seats being released, should I be looking T-355 out? Will be using Asia Miles.

Also, it seems you can pool your Asia Miles balance with other people; does it work similar to Aeroplan family sharing? Or can my P2 transfer her Asia miles balance from her account to mine?

I'm surprised with their attitudes, the US hasn't banned CX flying over russia when flying away from JFK etc. its a huge money making route for them, so CX is fortunate, the new frequencies would also likely fly over russia, including DFW.

meanwhile the mainland airlines cannot fly over russia with their new routes.

if cx fly through russia for DFW route, no AA codeshare is applied. It may have adverse impact to the route.

Same as in the US, one needs to clear immigration, customs and security even on Intl-Intl transfer at MEX. Picking up checked bags to clear customs is also mandatory even when connecting onto the same airline. So MEX is as unappealing as any transit point in U.S. plus there isn't any OW connection out of MEX unless one is backtracking to the U.S. on AA.

LATAM being the only CX partner in South American, for CX to connect with the LA/JJ hubs, the following 5th freedom flights make more sense: YVR-LIM, AKL-SCL (already flown by LA), MAD-BOG (also flown by LA) and JNB-GRU (already flown by JJ).

I don't know how transferring is there but some mentioned MEX for the possibility of those who wanted to avoid the US (and not just for geopolitical reasons - the whole thing with luggage and immigration during international US airport transfers is so annoying.)

Beyond Mexico, range becomes an issue so one would have to imagine fifth freedom routes.

DFW is a big market by itself, not to mention CX can put it's code on AA flights, just like ORD, so the same effect can still be achieved

As you may know, the NA flights have huge demand. You'll need to keep checking daily. The first hurdle is the demand from revenue customers. CX might close off all redemption seats if it's predicted to have a high load. Afterwards, they'll release them to DMs and then the general public if redemption demand from elites is low.

You can now pool your kid's AM. Your F&F can transfer you miles but at an absurd cost.

TMK, the US hasn't banned any foreign carriers from passing through Russian airspace to or from the US. Doing so might come across as arbitrary. But, there are other forces at play that dissuade incumbents from pushing the envelope.

you are correct on that and CX can also codeshare on EWR-DFW both ways. The way I do it is adding in a Southeast Asia destination or an Australian one to the DFW/ORD to HKG flights. Examples DFW-HKG-MNL/CEB/CRK and DFW-HKG-PER.

I missed that one. Can you share a link or two on that please?

XXChams in HK a) aren't officials (c.f. consulates/trade commissions); and b) promote the extratriate community's interest.
When Australian Federal Government proposed changes to Aus tax law making more Australians in HK subject to Australian tax in 2021, Auscham HK (naturally) advocated against it https://www.austcham.com.hk/sites/de...-%20Glenda.pdf . Such advocacy might be portrayed by resident Australians as tax dodging (as of present the rule changes have stalled).

If I am allowed to indulge in a bit of historical analogising, it will be akin to China Hands advising President Truman not to let KMT fall in Mainland China.

Probably if he were just promoting American businesses within HK it would have been okay, but he was also promoting HK itself as a location for business (arguably as a way of supporting American businesses there.) Still, seems like a standard thing for someone in his position to do. The move did receive criticism for coming after him for just doing his job (see here: https://foreignpolicy.com/2023/03/20...ttee-cold-war/)

Glad that CX is initiating new routes, however, what about previous resumptions?

FCO, ADL, LGW, BRU (personal preference for this one), EWR, CPT etc

I'd love to see LGW come back- still no updates on it being resumed :(
