"Connecting", but separate ticket, minimum time in HKG

I have a oneworld DONE3 (RTW ticket) and arrive HKG from NRT on CX at 9:20 PM. My destination is TPE and there is a last CX flight at 10:50 PM which is not included in the RTW ticket; I would purchase it separately. Is an hour and a half a reasonable amount of time? Is there a transit desk these days? If the NRT-HKG flight is delayed, would I be protected for a next day flight? I'm planning on carry on only. After Taipei, my departure from Hong Kong is at 4:50 PM. How early should I plan to arrive to comfortably make that flight (I don't mind the lounge or even the restaurants in the terminal.)
Had I realized this was going to be a $400 plus economy ticket I would have spent two segments of my DONE3 on HKG-TPE, And if it is unlikely the above connection will work, I could spend a day in Hong Kong and purchase a ticket from a lower cost carrier. I don't want an early flight where I can't check in to my hotel in Taipei after 3 flights without stopover. Thanks

I don't know the answer to your question about whether CX would protect you on separate tickets in the event of IROPS, but presumably someone who knows the answer will be a long soon to post it.

As to cost, have you explored the possibility of redeeming miles for the HKG-TPE segment?

If youre starting your journey with CX at NRT, you can ask them to print your HKG-TPE boarding pass. This should in theory flag you as a connecting passenger in their systems. If you do OLCI and print your own boarding pass youre probably on your own.

From my personal experience, CX has been quite generous with offering protection when misconnecting on separate tickets. At least, on CX-CX connections. Still, theres no guarantee of this.

I am doing a similar plan but on first with JL, HND - HKG and HKG - SGN prposed on CX with 1.5 hours of transit in September (a last minute change of final destination). Would I be able to board the CX flight, as long as I check-in at the transfer desk? This would be in late August; hopefully typhoons do not delay the JL flight. Otherwise, would buying a CX flexible ticket be worth it to change my flight to the following date?

Good idea, I've got several currencies. Point redemption is not my strong suit but I have some free time coming up....

Duh!, I hadn't thought of that. I've got 2 hours, 15 minutes there, should be no problem. Thanks

As others have said you will be fine with CX-CX or CX-interline partner on separate tickets, as CX does through-check on separate tickets. See https://www.cathaypacific.com/cx/en_....html?switch=Y

Misconnection is not protected among oneworld airlines unless all segments are booked in 1 PNR (separate tickets or not), but as others have said, you should be fine, although there is no official guarantee.

Wanted to see if there have been any recent data points on Cathay protecting/re-accommodating missed connections on separate tickets.

My friend and I are flying NRT-HKG-HAN on Sunday. NRT-HKG is a CX issued award ticket, and HKG-HAN is a CX revenue ticket. The connection time is almost 4 hours, so I assumed there was not much to worry about, especially since CX will through check bags.

However, I now see that it is forecast to snow in Tokyo on Sunday, and I am worried about potential delays to the NRT-HKG flight. Any guesses as to how helpful CX will be if the first flight is delayed/cancelled and we miss the flight to Hanoi?

There are two different scenarios;
- The arriving ac is delayed and CX believes that you cannot make the connection because of late departure/cancellation of the flight from NRT. Then they won't check your bags through and you have to make arrangements to change your HKG-HAN ticket. CX might be very busy rescheduling other pax on a single ticket.

- No major delay is expected and you are checked through. But some unexpected delay happens for take-off. Then CX should take care of you.

This is helpful - thank you! And just to confirm, in the first scenario, there's not much the agents at NRT will be able to do and it will best to call Cathay (or just book a new flight on our own), right?

If there is a confirmed delay NRT desk may reroute you. They've done it for me https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/36255461-post7.html

(Come to think of it this example is extremely apt - in May 2024 my wife's family and I were on CX451-CX451 on two separate tickets (wife's dad wanted TW and wife and her mum wanted JP - no redemptions with partners available, so the only way I can think of to take them all on miles was HKG-TPE-HKG and TPE-NRT-TPE). CX NRT checked us through and gave us two CX451 boarding passes and two lounge invites each, then called me back to desk because of bad weather over Taipei and exchanged our two boarding passes for direct CX521. Our flight diverted west of track all the way to Shanghai on the way back)

That's quite some computer system work to exchange NRTTPE on a ticket and TPEHKG on another ticket to NRTHKG.

Kudos to the agents at CX NRT
It might have helped both redemptions were on 160- though, and, I was OWE then https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/37577325-post422.html (the wife OWS https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/37581199-post2139.html )

That's an encouraging precedent! Hopefully such agents are at NRT this weekend.

In any case, this is all very helpful and much appreciated. Thank you all.
