『club point run』on my birthday— interesting experience

OK, I need club point run and hope to get it done for a same day return flights. It is better to do it on Saturday because I could still get some rest on next day and in case any connection lost and stuck in HKG. My birthday happened to be Saturday so I did it on my birthday. The itinerary was below:

KHH-HKG 07.45-09.05
HKG-BKK 12.00-14.00
BKK-HKG 16.00-19.55
HKG-KHH 21.40-23.15

I know I could possibly get birthday upgrade. But since the aim was to get more club points, business class ticket was bought.

When checkin in KHH, 4 BPs were issued without any problem. But I particularly asked the agent whether there was any special message in the system. She said, “No.. Oh, it is your birthday, but no message. Maybe because you book business class already so no upgrade.” OK, fair enough.

On each flight, I received very warm greeting and happy birthday by all ISMs, SPs, and some FPs. I also got 4 lovely birthday cards and 3 boxes of chocolate. It was really kind of them and I appreciated them a lot. But I wonder who paid for the chocolates? CX? ISM only? Or ISM and some crew?

On HKG-BKK, it was old 1-2-1 A333 aircraft, and crew left a message on my personal monitor which was very impressive! I don’t know they can do that!

In this difficult time, keep flying CX is the best support to them.
Here I would like to thanks all the cabin crew who looking after me. It was a great birthday (4 legs in a day..mmmmm)
I hope CX management could see the crew are the most valuable asset, who are worth being treated well with respect.

Actually, the crew are not CX's "property" but rather CX's best asset. The food may have gone downhill, but the staff members are still great.

I would assume that the airline provides the chocolates as a matter of policy. In a few cases, crew fund very minor perks for certain passengers, such as pilots optionally giving the plastic wing pins to kids. Sometimes crew optionally will make some special effort, such as a good luck new year's card or an airline postcard signed by the crew, and any very minor expensive for this might be covered by the purser or pilot. In some other situations, either as a gift or a customer service gesture you might be given stuff on board (such as a higher cabin amenity kit of beverage) or something to take with you (a leftover bottle of wine from the flight's catering) by crew who know that it doesn't matter (or might even be encouraged by the airline, for example if a medical professional provides assistance during the flight and is given a nice bottle of champagne as a thank you).

Pleasse don't feel guilty that crew may be paying from their own pocket or at risk of discipline for violating rules when you receive such gifts and gestures. Enjoy!

The cards and box of Pennisula chocolate, I understand. (Or like if you said if it was a bottle of champagn from inflight catering). But I'm wonder how about the other two boxes of chocolate? Maybe they were from the ISM/crew themselves?

Happy Belated Birthday OP!

Edited: Looks like the gold box of chocolate on right is also from Duty free

Not sure about the Godiva truffles though

Thank you.
Your observation is very keen and I am wondering the same thing.
The Pennisula chocolate was from CX BKK-HKG inflight shop and Godiva gold box of chocolate was also from CX HKG-BKK inflight shop.
The Godiva truffles was given on KA KHH-HKG, but there was no any chocolate available on KA inflight shop!!!!!!
So it must be bought by ISM in airport duty free shop or somewhere else.
I should definately write a letter to MPC to thank her!! She was really really thoughtful!

Yeah I love these cards! I was on a long-haul this year for my birthday and they made a card signed by everyone with birthday wishes.

A very nice gesture from CX indeed.

On a related note, I find a TPE to CGK or SIN club points run to be more productive somehow (subjective opinion).

You can technically fly out on Friday evening and fly back the same night and board the midnight flight to CGK or SIN and return to HKG Saturday morning time (if you decide to push the TPE leg to a later date for another run).

The downside of it is you get an interrupted sleep but it’s tolerable!

I don't think cabin crew will use their own money to buy you a gift. If I have not mistaken, from what I know, if SL or above members fly on their bday, they will either get an one-class complimentary upgrade or a box of chocolate from CX/KA.

Last time when I flew KA in J on my bday, the cabin crew got me a box of chocolate, same as what you got on your KA flight, and made me a "special dessert" by using some bananas, some chocolates and a Häagen Dazs ice cream. It's quite warm-hearted honestly and it's something extra the company didn't require them doing so...

I got neither during my birthday CP run, altough I was already in J, the crew didn't mention a single word about my birthday

At least I earned those CPs lol

I did a ex ICN flight to London on my Birthday last year too but I only received 3 cards and 1 box of chocolate (seems OP is lucky)
So my itinerary is below:
HKG - ICN (J) 0100 - 0530 (Card and Chocolate)
ICN - HKG (J) 0800 - 1200 (Card only) and crew even asked if I had got the chocolate in my previous flight and asked me why do i fly on my bday like this (Which i think is pretty mean)
HKG - LHR (J) time forgot - (Card only) but the crew and ISM welcome me on board and keep saying happy birthday and offer me the champagne in F. ISM also came to me and chat with me again before landing on my plan how to spend my Bday in London. This is pretty sweet though.
