Sorry, perhaps I am a bit slow with this concept. So the timing to cancel would be after the 11th statement has been issued, and after I pass the anniversary date of my card being issued, but before the 12th statement is actually issued?

So essentially after 1 year and 1 day of my card being approved, I should be safe and cancel it.

Ahh I get it - because the annual fee will not show up on the 12th statement, but instead be tacked on during payment of the 12th statement instead?

Thanks a lot Percy. Much appreciated.

I cancelled it one day after the first anniversary of my card activation and was not charged a annual fee, did not see annual fee. Me/my family have done this a couple times already.

Well you have to decide for yourself whether the 1.95% is worth the extra miles obtained.

Assuming your Unionpay card earns RMB15/AM (BoC or CCB) and your other card is a $4/AM card like SCB AM, DBS Black or Premiermiles, for $100 worth of RMB charged:

Fee: $1.95
Miles obtained by V/MC: 25
Less miles obtained by Unionpay: 6 (I rounded down because it's RMB15/AM not $15/AM)

$1.95 = 25-6
Each AM costs $0.1026. Are you willing to pay that much?

Also be aware you may be involuntarily DCCed in the PRC. I'm not sure whether that is still a thing but assume it is.

Thanks PS for the calculations

Another question is that I wanted to get the SCB miles card but got rejected but I'm quite surprised, they had no feedback obviously as to why I was rejected. And plus I have Priority banking with SCB with credit card - has anyone faced the same issue?

I was thinking I should cancel one card and then apply again?

I see, so it is one year from the card activation date and not card approval date.

Many thanks for the valuable information!

On this topic, does anyone know if Amex would be able to tell me how long ago I closed a card (in this case CX Elite)? I want to re-apply under the current RSVP offer but I'm not sure it has been a year since I cancelled my previous card.

And additionally, is the 'test' to determine if I am eligible for the welcome offer done on the day I am approved or on the day that I activate my card?

They can check. Call 2277 1010. Don't need to be existing customer to call that line.

Card approval date not acknowledgement date.

HSBC RED question

Apologies if asked before (I went through past two months of posts and didn't see anything), does an overseas online shopping charge (denominated in GBP or USD) count as online spending (4%) or just regular overseas spending (1%)? Thanks!

All online spend is counted for the 4%, regardless of transaction country or currency.

2020 HSBC Red Hot Rewards of Your Choice

Its time to choose whether to stick with the same extra 5X RewardCash category for 2020 or switch to another one, before the 9 December selection deadline.

I've stuck with Overseas Spending as my 5X RewardCash category for years, mostly because of how much I buy online from overseas merchants. But am I right in thinking that HSBC Red now beats 5X RewardCash for Overseas Spending when it comes to online spending overseas? In which case, much less point in sticking with Overseas Spending for 2020 when you can now use HSBC Red instead for overseas online spending. Although still a good option if you take a lot of overseas holidays (and maybe also when 5X RewardCash stacks with other HSBC Overseas spending promos, such as the one for Premier MC this year).

You may still stick with Overseas Spending for your reward category. For online, use Red card as you said, but for regular traveling, put all your spending on HSBC VS. The reason is HSBC VS would offer you 3.6% cash back for all foreign spend, with no prerequisites (e.g. no minimum spend or cap), and you can still participate in any overseas promotions HSBC gives out to potentially earn 4-5%.

That is probably unmatched for an overseas card, whereas if you were to put it with Dining, there are many other cards that would offer you decent dining rewards already.
