Thats helpful and makes me feel better! Thank you! So I was on one of the YVR flights with service reductions and I knew my flight from YVR-HKG was going to cancel so I looked at my options and noticed the KA flight I’m on wasn’t listed in business. Looking at availability it was zeroed out in business class so I called CX to try and see if they would move to the flights I wanted (earlier YVR-HKG and same HKG-HAN) but the agent muttered that the something about business class being -1. I don’t know for certain if that means it’s oversold though. Ironically, the reason I called in was so that this wouldn’t happen since I had a gut feeling it would. Funny enough, the day after I called they cancelled my flight in the system and I was rebooked onto the flights I wanted and I confirmed that on the CX website. I was actually really happy with how it all just worked out...until Monday morning :D.

A bit of an update. I called the US number this morning and the agent was pretty sympathetic but sounded like she didn’t have much power to fix it because there were no seats available. FWIW I got them to link me and my buddies ticket, something I should’ve done when we originally booked the tickets. She said they would have to ask Hong Kong to place me back onto the original flight. My fear here is Hong Kong knows this is a mistake fare and will tell me to pound sand. FWIW the morning flight I’m on looks full at the moment too so I don’t think they can even get my friend onto it. It sorta sounded like they would place me on standby for the flight so I’m hoping they’ll be able to get back to me in the morning. Otherwise, what would my options be if they refuse to put me back on the flight I booked? There is a VN flight 3 hours before which I would be ok with taking as a last resort so long as they move my friend onto that flight for free. Otherwise is standing firm calling this an IDB the best bet here (seeing as they confirmed the move without consulting me)?

Thanks

A bit of a late update to this since I've been traveling...

I was able to get put back onto the original flight in J but it looks like the person I'm traveling with got a free upgrade to F :D. When I got the change notification I reselected a seat in J and I did the same for the person I'm traveling with but oddly the only seats his reservation could select were F seats. Kinda funny that he got the op-up but its only a 2 hour flight and works for us.

Thanks again for the help!

This strange. KA does not offer F on HKG-HAN.

Maybe they plan to fly a three-class ac and open the F seat to J pax with status and your friend has OWE status.

That's what I thought as well. It is very clearly F from the seat map as it shows 1 2 1 rather than 2 2 2. My friend doesn't have OWE status so I was a bit confused as well  (I assumed that they would have done the "op-ups" like that as well).

You mentioned, that the flight was very full, so they decided to open the F section for assignment as all other seats had been already assigned and your friend got lucky. Just a likely guess.
Remember that KA F seats are just CX longhaul J seats. Still much nicer than the regional J seats.

Question re cancelling just the return

Hi - was wondering if anyone successfully cancelled the return of one of these fares I am using one to go Da Nang - JFK but will go direct to London after so just use one way?
interestingly I had a flight change on the return HKG-Da Nang put back 12 hours so making 24 stopover in HKG minimum on my dates. I called and asked to change the return to 2020 and they said only change if within a week.
I guess I can just ditch the return as still great for one-way.
thanks.

What would you be expecting to get as a refund for cancelling the return? If they cancel the return, they will reprice the fare as a one way, and you will actually have to pay Cathay a large sum for the fare difference.

Question to those flying back to Hong Kong and dropping the last segment to Vietnam...did you still get another entry visa? I assume you need one right?

Yes. CX sent a memo to US and Canadian airport staff that these tickets staying less than 24 hours in HKG pax must have entry clearance into Vietnam or else will deny boarding. They view it as we’ve honored the ticket but you need to play by the rules, which I think is fair.

Visa and ticket from Vietnam to HK were checked at LAX, both at counter and boarding gate.

Or print of onwards ticket qualified for Transit Without Visa, right ?

Have onwards VN ticket HAN-BKK leaving 3 hours after arriving on KA HKG-HAN and intend to use Transit Without Visa (after having enjoyed Hanoi on the outbound).

Expect print of VN ticket will be enough to board in SFO and HKG ?

Onward fake Air Asia or Jet Star pacific ticket work.
They cannot verify it in their system

I would try to minimize hassle and the uncertainty at the US airport.

I don't know your nationality. But I assume you can get a visa on arrival or an e-visa. Once you are checked in you don't really need it anymore. Make sure your passport has a 6 month validity before your flight.

Going the transit visa way seems more hassle. You have to book a fully refundable ticket (there is usually some refund fee) and get reimbursed. Unsure that the check-in agent is familiar with such transit procedure.

I have a paid 1st class SFO-HKG-HAN ticket, my wife is flying with me on the outbound on a 1st mileage ticket SFO-HKG-CHC. My flight lands at 6 am and the next one leaves at 9pm that night. Hers leaves 9pm one day later. We also have a same day HKG-TPE ticket that leaves same time as my HKG-HAN flight. All are on Cathay.

We are meeting friends in HKG the day we land and she will have a checked bag. What are our options in terms of picking up her bag?
1) can she check it all the way to CHC even though its 36 hours after first leg of flight?
2 Can she leave at baggage as we go enjoy lounge until meeting friends for lunch at 1pm?
3) What is process for her to pick up luggage and then return to lounge? Does she have to clear immigration? Once? Twice?

Thanks in advance for your help. Also if I am missing something please point out.

There are a bunch of luggage storage lockers at a few stations.
It’s possible to check in up to 48hrs in advance, but you likely wouldn’t be able to leave bags until a few hours from departure.
Lounges are airside after immigration. You cannot casually go from lounge to landslide - if you have some emergency, you can request an escort back but it might take a few hours.
