doubles asiamiles

I just noticed CX is offering double AsiaMiles from Canada www.cathay.ca/offers/asiamiles
but am curious if this would be double the amount I can approximate at the Great Cicle Mapper http://gc.kls2.com

Opinions?

Asiamiles had to offer something similar to what AAdvantage is offering their members however it still pales by comparison to what the latter is doing.

Asiamiles is only offering double base miles. Which is already what AAdvantage members offer their Platinum and Exec Plat members on ever oneworld flights.
ie so a YVR-HKG routing is approx 6392 miles in Biz class. 6392+6392+1598(25%)= 14,382miles. Return is 28,764 only.

AAdvantage is offering Repeat Rewards offers which escalate in bonus miles for each roundtrip on CX.

eg
1st round trip - 25K bonus miles
2nd round trip - 30K
3rd round trip - 40K
4th round trip - 45K
5th round trip - 55K
6th round trip - 75K
7th r/trip on - 110K

That does not include the already 100% bonus base miles if you're a Plat or Exec Plat AAdvantage member.

So for AA's offer... 6392+1598+6392(100% bonus elite miles). Round trip = 28,764.
Then the 1st round trip repeat Rewards offer kicks in 25K bonus. = 53,764

So comparing, say you've got 7 return flights amassed on CX between YVR and HKG.
On Asiamiles, you'd get:
28,764 x 7 = 201,348 miles

On AA, you'd already get :
28,764 x 7 = 201,348 miles
RR bonus: 380,000 miles
Total : 581,348 miles !

The only consolation is that on Asiamiles, the offer extends to economy class travel but not on AAdvantage.

So, which programme do you think you'd rather use?

Edited. Due to miscalculation.

Thanks for the reply, but not sure about the math. Here's the details I found at AA website where it says earn UP TO 100,000 bonus miles:

http://www.aa.com/apps/netSAAver/Vie...omotionContent

Unfortunately, my friend won't be anywhere near business or first class so the AA promo doesn't apply. I checked and with CX double miles promo, these friends doing YVR-HKG-BNE would earn approx 42K AsiaMiles, less than half of the 110K required for a free trip same routing in future. They might be better off to collect on AA and be around 20K, which is close to free ticket Canada-USA.

Hi tcook052, you had looked at the Repeat Rewards offer for US residents. For Canadian residents, the offer is higher .. see http://www.aa.com/apps/netSAAver/Vie...omotionContent

But FYI, if you look carefully at the rules on CX's offer, the double base miles is only for the Transpacific portion of the trip - not the entire trip. Hence your friends will net only 34,168 for their YVR-HKG-BNE roundtrip and not 42,804 miles.

However, if they do a say Platinum challenge, they can do the outbound regular' miles to prove to AAdvantage on the challenge. But by the time they return, they would be Platinum and hence accrue double base miles on the BNE-HKG-YVR journey. Totalling 32,103 miles. Plus they'd be Platinum = Oneworld Emerald and have lounge access when travelling on Oneworld international flights from hereon in.

Check out the AA forum for Platinum challenges.

Thanks Guy Betsy for the info about the AA Plat challenge. I'll pass that one on for sure.

What was meaning about the bus. class AA promo is that bonus miles max out at 110K for Canadian residents, not the 380K you'd calculated. You get a tiered bonus, like AC AP like to offer, not a cumulative one. For example, after first rt you get 25K bonus, and another 5K bonus after second,10K more after third, etc. So 25+5+10+5+10+20+35 equals 110K total bonus.

No. You don't get a tiered bonus. You get what is offered after EACH round trip. I've just done my 2nd... and received the 30K miles in addition to the 25K originally posted after my first round trip. I'm now on to my 3rd roundtrip and will receive 40K by April. I know people who have flown their 7th and 8th and have received 110K miles respectively after each round trip.

Some AAdvantage members receive higher 'Personal Invitation' offers with CX and receive as high as 125K bonus from the 7th trip onwards!

Guy, I sit corrected. Thought it sounded too generous a promo, but read the very fine print and you are correct.

I did a bit more digging as per your suggestion on the AA Plat challenge option and looks like a real winner. My friends will earn approx 10628 miles YVR-HKG-BNE and therefore qualify for plat and enjoy some perks on return. The friends are not FF types, so had to explain it in layman's terms, which was harder than it sounds. I'm used to dealing with quite knowledgable FT types who know what Q miles are or have comitted the elite levels to memory.

I'd forgotten about that little AA Plat challenge gem as not an active AA flyer (since they don't serve YEG anymore). So thanks for the tip!

The funny thing about this is that it's CX that is actually paying AAdvantage for this promotion! Yet CX hawks their Asiamiles programme when you are on their flights..."Asiamiles forms are available on board.." always wants to make me jump up and ask "WHAT FOR?"

FYI - AAdvantage miles do not expire as long as there is some 'activity' every 3 years. Asiamiles do expire after 3 years.
