But FYI, if you look carefully at the rules on CX's offer, the double base miles is only for the Transpacific portion of the trip - not the entire trip. Hence your friends will net only 34,168 for their YVR-HKG-BNE roundtrip and not 42,804 miles.

However, if they do a say Platinum challenge, they can do the outbound regular' miles to prove to AAdvantage on the challenge. But by the time they return, they would be Platinum and hence accrue double base miles on the BNE-HKG-YVR journey. Totalling 32,103 miles. Plus they'd be Platinum = Oneworld Emerald and have lounge access when travelling on Oneworld international flights from hereon in.
