Thanks, that's what I guessed. In that case, I think I'll chance it with some PNS coupons (maybe mixed in with some other purchases) and see what happens.

HSBC Red Hot Fridays will be re-introduced

Per flyformiles (rumour only at present) per comments of https://www.facebook.com/FlyForMiles...67343350136136

We received HSBC 2% Rewardcash March and April over threshold targeted offers in the mail last night (well, the wife did) which hinted new offers will be rolled out in due course.

My perception though is that Wellcome at least has higher prices on many items on Friday than earlier in the week, so care is needed depending on where you're spending on a Friday to ensure it's not a false reward! Daily variable pricing at Wellcome really pisses me off, particularly when the price on the shelf gets out of step with what's in the checkout computer (and, surprise, surprise, 9 times out of 10 it's the checkout price that is higher).

Sorry - that was a slightly off topic rant!

Not at all

That's only for the uninitiated - you can buy coupons.

Barcode - you can ask for a price check. I was trying to find an old HK code of practice last night when barcode was introduced that guaranteed shoppers the displayed price will always get honoured (couldn't find it unfortunately.

Good thing with coupons - you try to count to nearest 50 before heading to counter - so you know when the barcode price is incorrect.

Of course no problem with buying coupons, but I do actually do some of my shopping for miles for things that I actually need. Like food.

And yes, I almost always know when at the checkout what each item should cost, and then I have to make a judgement depending on how big the difference between the shelf price and the till price is and how much I want to piss off the 10 people standing in line behind me to get served (my local Wellcome is seriously under staffed on checkouts much of the time). If there's no-one in line or the shelf is a few feet away then I always go and get the shelf ticket and get them to enter the correct price, but far more often I just take the hit and move on.

And of course it is illegal to have a different price on the till than on the shelf. From time to time we read in the press that C&E prosecutes Wellcome or ParknShop for this, but the fine is maybe $5000, and I guess they make more than that every day from this practice, so why would they stop?

Today's example: at ParknShop on the way home from a hike. On the shelf, special 3*TsingTao Draft (yes, I know, crappy beer, but I was thirsty and I'm a poor retiree) = $18.9. Actual price on the till = $20.7. Am I going to piss of the 10 people behind me by making them wait for 2 or 3 minutes while I go to the other end of the store, find the shelf tag and bring it back to the till, wait for them to call the manager, and do the correction? No. I just take the $1.80 hit.

On Citi PremierMiles I believe so, as long as they are billed in the original currency and not DCCed.

But a HKD transaction would earn at the standard rate anyway?

Yes, that is my belief, but I might be wrong, and I wait for a definitive view from our guru.

While we wait for our guru, allow me to say that Tsingtao Draft is by no means a crappy beer, compared to a lot of the other "beers" on sale at Wellcome (and 7-11). OT over.

Edit: forgot my question because i was talking about beer: did you guys also get the Citi Premier Miles offer for 2 HKD = 1 AM after threshold X? Mine's 17.2K/period, and I was wondering what everone else's was.

Not a guru (or the only one). But yes Paypal is generally a retail transaction earning basic points at least (http://www.hongkongcard.com/forum/fo...p?id=8995&p=16 #152 )

Where is your merchant located, and what currency are you paying?
