Have just (well .... four hours ago, to be precise) landed HKG after flying this sector as CX640 on a 332.
Thought it was a pretty good flight, helped perhaps by the fact that J class happened to be very light ..... maybe around ten or twelve total.
Am never a great sleeper on aircraft, regardless of cabin, but actually found the bed to be very comfortable - in fact, about as comfortable as the bed in F suites on EK which I've experienced quite often in recent years on my (sometimes circuitous) routings down to Australasia. Obviously less privacy than with suites (and no A380 showers, which can be welcome at times), but with so few other pax spread across the two J cabins, it made little difference really.
As an aside, the food was rather better than I had been fearing, based on some of the comments appearing in the dedicated CX J catering thread. Admittedly, it was substandard in terms of presentation & 'style' ..... but it was certainly tasty enough (especially my Prawn Machbous main) and there was enough of it.
Shame to see the route dropped by Cathay. Very pleasant crew.

I flew J from Africa to HKG via DOH.
The first sector was on Qatar A320 (2-2 configuration). The seat was uncomfortable, not to mention the unhappy crew. Its J class was just comparable to CX's PE. The couple in front of me recline their seats, and it's difficult for me (on a window seat) to get out to the aisle. The chosen entrée and dessert were all unavailable...!
For the CX sector to HKG, the bed was soooo comfortable. Pleasant crew who greeted everyone with Kung Hei Fat Choi! Cannot say the food (chose chicken for the main course) is the best, but I do think it's tasty enough as compared to the lamb biryani on QR...
I will miss CX for this route...

If true, hilarious timing...almost immediately after the CX/QR JV ends, Qatar significantly bumps up the product offering.

FWIW, I saw Qatar flying B788 to HKG a few days ago and noticed it pop up on flightaware again today. Any idea if this swap from A330 to B787 is happening earlier than expected? QR's B787 is a killer reason to fly Qatar ex-HKG in J...their J product is often very reasonably priced, and is basically an upgraded, slightly fancier version of CX's J hard product with significantly superior catering to the nonsense CX serves in J.

Wouldn't surprise me at all. A tacit admission by CX that Qatar's B787 is a superior hard+soft product to anything CX could offer. Whereas CX's hard product has QR beaten on the latter's A330. Demand for the QR plane would've been way out of whack over CX had Qatar used the B787 when the JV was active.

You will have a better experience on the 787 if you are flying J, but will be a nightmare if you are flying Y. Their 787 is 3-3-3 seating, one of the most narrow seat I have even tried. Also, there is a big tv box on some of the seats which block your leg room. Their AVOD is very slow, always take 20-30 seconds to load the flight map....The Y seat of CX 330 is definitely more preferable.
Also, I just flew QR's A330-300 back to Hong Kong. The Y seat is wider than their 787, but there was no electric plug to charge the battery. The resolution for the tv is low, and the system was slow. Also, the tv box is huge. Again CX's 330 is far better than QR's 330.
The problem with QR is their product consistency. You will get very different experience when you fly on different aircraft, which this one CX is much better.
