Welcome to FT.
I think the answer to your question is probably no, but if you're in J, whether you're Silver or Gold should make zero difference to your ground or inflight experience. Just waiting it out makes more sense, as op-up for Gold members won't happen J to F.
Only extra benefit you'll get from Gold is 1pc extra allowance on this route. Don't know if that matters to you.

Hi -- in my personal experience and the general consensus here on FT, it seems upgrading a tier while short of miles is rare, but renewal does happen. That being said, there is no harm in trying, as you can make the logical argument that a huge chunk of club miles are going to be effectively wasted, as your mile count will reset.
Couple questions:
- Are you likely to renew for GO in your next membership year without this J flight? If so, then it doesn't really matter and as midlevels says, it is unlikely to impact your experience on the ground or in the air. If you are unlikely to renew, though, then it is definitely worth asking as those miles will go a long way to helping you, clearly.
One other option is to remove your MPC number at the gate and wait for a short-haul flight to move you up to GO, and then reclaim the HKG-LAX flight after you are upgraded so that the miles are not wasted.
Good luck!

Hi
just called MPC and they did agree to do a tier upgrade

I did use the argument that since my next tier upgrade is 150 miles whist my next flight would credit 9000 miles. Either way, I would have made gold easily but I am aiming diamond hence trying to maximize the club miles.
Thanks to everyone !

Glad CX saw reason and gave you the status being 150 miles short. I also think they're reset makes it hard for anyone to switch over into being Diamond. That's the reason I stick to AA and BA for my miles - I am OWE for life now thankfully with BA and get great treatment on CX with it.

But to the OP, its certainly rare to hear someone being bumped up early, so congratulations

Weren't you doing CX MLV fares mostly? CX would've be optimal in that situation.
You started around early 2010 right? AA changed the MM rules on Dec 1, 2011 so you would've had to put alot of your CC miles into AA prior to the 2011 date.
I really started flying AA back in 08 (with 100K lifetime), Jumped from CX Gold > AA EXP.
By the 2011 rule change I was around 960K, but I put up with alot of AA 772 J ORD-PVG for years, not everyone would've done that.
Now 2 1/4 yrs later, I'm still only at 1.2MM.

AA is a Great Program (for now) but it's not for everyone

I had the same thoughts and regretted going BA credit for all my flights (since I was BA Gold when oneworld launched and I never looked at changing). Subsequently I have been balancing between AA & BA, and out of the blue BA pulls a wild card and I am now Emerald for life....
