I think the answer to your question is probably no, but if you're in J, whether you're Silver or Gold should make zero difference to your ground or inflight experience. Just waiting it out makes more sense, as op-up for Gold members won't happen J to F.
Only extra benefit you'll get from Gold is 1pc extra allowance on this route. Don't know if that matters to you.
I don't know about now, but they did op-up OWE J to F back around 2007. I was op-upped to J and took his seat. His colleague (sitting next to me) told me.

I did use the argument that since my next tier upgrade is 150 miles whist my next flight would credit 9000 miles. Either way, I would have made gold easily but I am aiming diamond hence trying to maximize the club miles.
