Yes, eligible for op-up.

Yup... all four segments are eligible. The min-bid is about $1100 USD IAD<->HKG.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. Will wait until closer to 7/5 to decide whether or not to bid as loads start to become more evident.

Unfortunately the bidding system seems completely useless. From the posts I read in this forum, the recommended prices are usually so high they are laughable and/or just plain broken (aka, same or even higher price than the original ticket in the higher class).

newty25 May 22, 2019 5:48 pm

I paid about $3k/ticket for my "E"class fares and the suggested $2k bid per leg would make my ticket about $7k/ticket. A small discount over what I would have paid to just secure the ticket by buying it outright.

And I would assume that if I have a bid that gets rejected, I won't be getting an op-up should one become available.

I think I might just hold tight and stick with my original ticket and see what happens.

That has been my experience as well.

Not true. On 2 past flights, my low bids were rejected but got op-up during check-in. So it doesn't seem a rejected bid would change your op-up chance.

LOL! That's crazy. Rejecting additional revenue.

Thanks for the info!

Hello all.

I am CX Marco Polo Silver Status and BA Gold. Flying DUB - HKG soon on CX direct service. What loyalty scheme am I best off to use as my main Frequent Flyer for this ticket, can I use more then one programme on ticket? I am currently in PE on DUB - HKG leg and economy on home leg. Dub - HKG seems pretty full. Thank you

HiltonX Jun 2, 2019 9:14 pm

Separate bids

Me and girlfriend will fly HKG-MAD in December, but we booked our tickets separatly, so it really looks like we are travelling singlehanded. What if we both bid, but only one of us gets accepted?.
Is it possible to reverse the bid after it has been cleared? because both of us wants to upgrade to Business and sit together of course

I would use BA Gold, unfortunately it's not possible to associate both your MPC and BA Gold card with your booking. The only time where this is useful is a case where you'll get physical benefits from one and not the other. An example would be priority boarding, that's given to MPC Green members but not BA Bronze (or oneworld ruby equivalent).

Have got lucky this week with op-ups, 2/2. Noticed a new feature, CX now sends email notifications "Seat change to your flight CXxxx". Has this been around before and I've just missed it, or is this a new thing?

newty25 Jun 13, 2019 6:15 am

Did you notice if economy and/or PE were both sold out on your flight?

And were you booked for PE originally or did you get the double op-up?

Hi all,

am new here! Looking to book SIN-HKG return 13JUL - 16 JUL. Is it a good idea to book Core instead of Save, if I'm looking at any slight chance of upgrade?
I got invited to MPC after flying several flights with Cathay, am also flying on my birthday (13 JUL), if it helps.

also, can anyone kindly help me to check the flight load for CX650 and CX710, please (or is it still too early to tell?) Thanks!

If I win bid, will exit seat cost be refunded?

CX newbie flying HNG >SEA. I’m booked in economy but have paid for an exit row seat. Just found that I am eligible to bid on an upgrade to PE. On AA when you waitlist for an upgrade (points+$) and it goes through, whatever you paid for an extra legroom seat gets refunded. Is this the case with CX too?

TIA,
Clay

Does anyone know if it is possible to upgrade a fare code from E to W*?

Thanks!

blum81 Jun 29, 2019 8:50 pm

I've paid the difference between an E to a W/R so I'm able to use my points to be on the waitlist.

My employer usually pays for the base premium economy E fare and I just call in to pay the difference.

Any recent data points re: upgrades using Asia miles and which status to use?

I am AA Executive Platinum and CX Silver. I am waitlisted for an upgrade PE->J for HKG-LHR CX 225 July 8th. Still showing plenty of seats in J. I would assume my OWE status would be higher, but I was flying with my wife a few weeks ago from LAX-HKG. Both booked into I fares. She had her MPC Silver in the system and I had my AA EXP (OWE). She got an op-up from J->F and I was rather surprised (even though I would have given it to her anyway).

Looks like its random if OWE beats CX Silver these days? What made it more surprising was that I have more CP on CX this year than she does as well...

It is not random. It is how it works (and TBH how it should work). My family was flying with me on ORD-HKG a few days ago. One of us an OWE in PEY did not get opup to J while SLs and GR did. Very fair and well done. #CXit

Interesting. For the longest time the consensus here is that op-up is done by tier (with OWE sitting either above SL or GR) first and only if there is a draw then they go with whoever has the higher CIV score.

I know for a fact that I have been GO for the past years and for whatever upgrades I had enjoyed, I have seen the Inflight Manager walking to the back to greet DMs in the EY cabin.

I think if SLs have a higher priority than OWE it’s fine, but having GRs ahead of OW elites doesn’t make much sense to me. Also, I think whether CIV plays a role in opup is a factor, imagine if a OWE who travels a lot on CX should get a high priority.

landingpoint Jul 3, 2019 6:57 am

Interestingly, I have had higher % of op-ups when travelling with my companion (SL) than if I was travelling alone (DM) --> makes me wonder if the op-up was because of DM or SL status.

i have no issue with Silver being above OWE but agree that green is a bit much considering you can just buy it. I do 90+% of my travel on CX (would be somewhere around 1000-1200 cp per year but prefer AA mileage rates and almost 100% upgrades on US domestic). I was just surprised because I thought common belief was that OWE was above Silver in upgrade/op up priority so was wondering if that had changed.

SLGO Jul 6, 2019 3:19 am

If SL (or even GR) is really ahead of OWE, this is surely something to lure those who jumped ship earlier to come back to MPC. But sometimes it’s just hard to say whether this is the case as route / loading / CIV etc. affect chances of upgrade too much.

Anyone have the loading for cx502 hkg to kix on 10july?

I was lucky enough to be upgraded from economy to premium economy on kix to tpe flight, and to business on sin to bkk. Maybe third times the (even more) charm?

Anyone got the loading in J for CX321 (HKG-BCN) on 17July? I am booked in PEconomy (R)... currently waitlisted.

mnt10 Jul 8, 2019 1:58 am

My first post here after a long time reading your collective wisdom...

I'm currently waitlisted for a redemption upgrade from PE to business on CX251 (HKG to LHR) travelling 25th July. What do you think my chances are? I know this flight is usually very busy so it's unlikely, can anyone help me find out what the load is like?

For redemption upgrades, when does the waitlist expire? I'm just a lowly GR at the moment (although will be SL by the time of the flight), does that make a difference in my chances?

Thanks!

Sorry, I am not overly familiar with the codes. Do I understand this right: 9 (or more) seats available in J class? If so then I I hope the upgrade waitlist will clear in time - by the 13th. What does the "NO MORE - 1* FOR CONX." refer to?

There are 9 or more seats available in J class, but given that no seat is available in I, I wouldn't be optimistic, although yes you have a chance (or you can try instant upgrade at the airport using miles).

"NO MORE - 1* FOR CONX." is just a message from Sabre that there is no more direct flight and that if I were to look up connecting options I would need to use the command "1*."

Cathay sells biz class tickets in 4 different fare class. They are J,C.D and I listed and basically that's the order of the fare price, J being most expensive and least restrictive, I class being the most discounted fare with the most restrictions.

Attempting to discern whether you're PEY (R class) ticket will get confirmed for upgrade award is non-specific as there aren't any tools available for us to accurately predict if CX will release an upgrade award to biz (i.e. J). High availability for I class tickets (most discounted biz) is a possible indicator for upgrade award inventory but there is no guarantee. I've had plenty of booking that showed I9, yet was unable to confirm upgrade award early. CX wants go sell revenue tickets as a priority. If revenue management predicts they can sell those tickets then upgrade award won't be available.

The user above looks like they are posting from a tool called KvsTool which can check for ticket availability. I use, like many others, expertlyer.com, which shows similar numbers. For your flight, EF is showing - J9 C5 D3 I0 W6 R4 E1 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V2 S0 N0 Q0 O0. Given those numbers -- I0, I wouldn't be very confident on clearing the waitlist for an upgrade confirmation. The waitlist will disappear at T-96 (4 days before departure). Theres a chance that closer to departure, CX may open more discount tickets and possibly open some upgrade awards. Problem is that if that happens after waitlist expires, T-96, those awards become first come, first served, no more waitlist.

The strategy would be to call MPC every day and inquire about upgrade availability. If upgrade is still not confirmed, ask at the check-in counter for instant upgrade.

We really need a FAQ about this in the "Will my award waitlist clear?" thread.
