Thanks for your honesty. I was going to pay the fare difference. Departure 24/12. I was thinking about upgrade bid program too perhaps closer to that date. I see DUB- HKG leg seems quite full. PE currently 8 seats filled.

Just wondering if CX ever does op-ups for empty planes? I'm a OWE, and the loads for my flights are showing 9's across the board, 4 days from departure. I'm asking as if there's no chance, I will proceed and order my special meal. I just didn't want that to disqualify me completely from a possible upgrade.

Thank you

Fare difference is very expensive, but you can probably decide at the airport.

No, CX won't op-up passengers if there is no operational reasons. Some MPC members may get milestone or birthday upgrades, but these are technically not op-ups. There are some threads on special meals and op-ups. It seems that they will repackage special meals for op-ups, but YMMV.

My wife booked a SFO-HKG flight on E class six days before her flight. There should be plenty of PEY availability. She was op-upped at the gate to business. That was a nice surprise as we were not expecting an overbooked Y/PEY, and she is only a SL. So anything can happen. Flights are sometimes full at last minute.

After having a very dry spell for the year 2018, I was surprised to be upgraded to J on NRT->HKG on an award ticket, late Oct and again, yesterday, upgraded to J on SIN->HKG on a "N" EY ticket. I was expecting nothing on both trips.

I am currently GO and I appreciate the upgrades. Thank you.

How to get waitlisted for an upgrade using miles?

Hello. I haven’t tried to upgrade in almost 2 years or so and the website looks slightly different. Previously, I could just go to manage my booking on the Cathay site, click my flights and waitlist for an upgrade with miles. Now when I go to manage my booking, I don’t see any way to click to upgrade with miles. Poking around on the internet, it seems that upgrades need to be processed on the Asia Miles website. But when I click through the upgrade with miles pages, it brings me to a page to redeem for a full award which I can waitlist for, but no upgrade.

I’ve been exchanging DMs with Cathay on Twitter but so far they have been instructing me to click through on Asia Miles which brings me to the same place I found on my own to redeem for a full award flight rather than an upgrade.

Help? Thanks in advance!

Have you ticketed the underlying booking?

Also are you travelling on an eligible fare class? Which?

Yes, but I purchased less than 24 hours ago (it was ticketed almost immediately, I have the e-Ticket confirmation). I wonder if that might be the problem and I should just wait a few days?

Yes. JFK-HKG R class (looking to upgrade from PE to Business) and HKG-KUL B class (looking to upgrade from Economy to Business, no PE class on flight).

I did manage to bumble my way back to the legacy website and found the button to click for upgrade awards, but it says no booking eligible for upgrade found :( Maybe I’ll wait a few more days and if I still can’t manage I will give Cathay a call.

My employer will normally only cover the bare minimum flight costs which is usually an economy save ticket. Ticket has already been purchased and issued.
I'm wondering if I'm able to call in and pay the difference to get an economy standard ticket which on my flight is an extra 20 club points.

Does anyone have any experience upgrading this ticket to a higher fair class economy ticket? ie. economy standard or economy flex?

percysmith Nov 22, 2018 6:08 pm

Refund and purchase of new ticket

But as a corporate accountant, I don't know how you handle the refund with your employer. Normally when we pay for a ticket, we demand to see boarding passes.

refunding wouldn't be an option as the fare was paid on the corporate credit card. I just wanted to see if I could pay the difference between an Economy (N) and Economy (V) to get the additional CP.

ok so I answered my own question by calling.

Just in case it helps anyone in the future, I was able to upgrade from an Economy (N) to an Economy (V) and paying the difference that was shown on the website. Was around $450hkd to get an additional 20 CP.

Only $450 difference for a long haul? That is quite good.

Any idea as to whether an op-up (PE --> J) is more likely from SFO or LAX (departing Sun/Mon, returning Thurs/Fri in May)?

I understand that the chance of an op-up is quite low, but are there any anecdotal experiences of one airport being more favorable in that regard than the other?

just impossible to say, sorry. both airports regularly op-up people in oversold situations. it's not like one does and one doesn't.

fwiw both airports have very similar flight schedules: 1x departing midday and 2x departing at midnight.

if we're really going to get into the weeds, SFO has more seats due to less-premium plane types (LAX gets 3x low capacity/F-equipped plane daily, whereas SFO gets 1x of that plane, and 2x higher-capacity B77W/A350). In theory this means there is less room for CX to op-up people to J if you're flying to/from SFO, since there are fewer seats in J+F to/from SFO and more in Y compared to LAX, despite the same # of flight frequencies. But in practice, honestly there's just zero point in making a decision based on this...and SFO could easily end up being the easier op-up, despite what I'm implying here.

I've been regularly buying J and F seats on these two routes for a long time now. What I can say for sure is SFO is easier to purchase F class, and also redeem these J->F upgrade coupons Diamond members have, despite there only being 1x flight daily with F to/from SFO. LAX can actually be tougher to score the flight I want in F class, despite 3x daily flights (there used to be 4, and not surprising to me, the 4th one was always wide-open in F IME).

However, SFO can be a bloody nightmare buying cash J class seats some times of the year, full to the gills and full price. I'm blown away by the business CX does to/from SFO, considering SFO is such a *A stronghold and basically a zero for OneWorld. 3x daily flights! But I digress. To/from LAX in J I don't recall the problem being like that, it seems cheapo J seats are in abundance.

What does all this mean for you? ...buy based on best schedule/convenience for you and definitely not op-up chances.

Alan Nevin Nov 24, 2018 10:12 am

Hello all. Where would I rank in being upgraded from economy to premium if economy is oversold and I am willing to pay cash to upgrade. DUB-HKG. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

christep Nov 24, 2018 10:23 am

If you pay cash then you are always at the head of the queue!

Thanks for confirming that I’m not crazy! But sorry that you’re having the same issue. I’m currently traveling and am planning to call next week. Will keep everyone updated!

Actually, not sure if this will help you but I was able to find a button that says “Previous Manage Booking” where I did find the option to click to upgrade with miles. However when I clicked on it, it only showed me a flight in the past as the sole eligible flight for upgrade. Maybe you can find your flight there to upgrade if you can navigate to that page.

I couldn't find it either. I had to call in and tell them the booking reference number and they put me on the waitlist.

I also can't find where it tells you when your waitlist will expire. I vaguely remember there was a date that said when your waitlist will expire.

So as some others have mentioned doing, I ended up calling MPC to request to be waitlisted. It was very quick but I'm just annoyed that I had to call in the first place. The waitlist request showed up on my account before I even hung up.

Also, I was informed that only the JFK-HKG route was eligible for ugprade, because the HKG-KUL flight is "codeshare". I started arguing with the CSR that it's the same company and then gave up, because clearly it's not the CSR's fault. So I guess there's no way for me to upgrade the HKG-KUL leg. Oh well. I don't need to fly business for such a short flight anyway, but still very puzzling.

In the "new" Manage Booking view, click on "More Options" and select Previous Manage Booking. You'll get back to the old view and should see the waitlist expiration up top in red font.

More op-up data points

CX636 SIN-HKG 20:15 departure on a Friday. Booked in S fare (economy class). Expertflyer was showing Y0.
No op-up at check in. While queueing at boarding gate, ground staff had a stack of new boarding passes and was combing the queue locating the op-ups in both First / DM line and Business / GO / SL line. Was handed over a J class boarding pass for myself (DM) and travel companion in the same itinerary (SL). There were DMs and OWEs in the line who did not get op-uped. Quite puzzling as I thought chances of op-up in a larger party will be lower.

CX619 BKK-SIN 12:45 departure on a Sunday. Booked in V fare (economy class). Expertflyer was showing Y0.
No op-up at check in. Beeped red when boarding pass was scanned at gate, and was handed over a J class boarding pass for myself (DM) and travel companion (SL) in the same itinerary.

Does anyone have any indication on how many seats CX typically oversells?

On a YVR-HKG flight later this month, I see J9 W8 Y0. I'm flying PEY as a OWE with a reasonable CX spend/CIV score (I believe). But with W8, I don't want to gets my hopes up that the rolling op-ups will reach me...

I thought CX will try and cannibalise PE and J for any Y fare.

But I guess you're looking at school holidays homecoming season. Plenty of students can afford Y so CX is trying for W and J fares.

CX883 2018.12.15
Originally J award ticket for my birthday. It was great for being op-up to F in the check-in counter.
No "Happy birthday" printed on the ticket. Can only access to Oneworld Lounge in LAX. So I think it is regular op-up with blessings from nice ground staffs (yes, more than 2 ground staffs greeted me in the counter).
I'm greatly appreciated and the overall experience was brilliant.

Just a question. Does overbooking happen often for the W cabin? And if availability in W is zero while J and Y are clear, what are the chances for op-ups from W>J? And will op-ups be confined to passengers in the W cabin or will the people in Y get a shot? Thanks!

no. Unless the whole PE cabin gets upgraded. Otherwise the redemption (me) in PE will be upgraded to J before the DM+ in Y.

Awesome. Thanks! I’m keeping my fingers crossed as OWS booked in E that there won’t be any DMs flying out of BRU.

Totally unexpected but please take note for tour group participaters.

My wife and I were on a winter european holiday tour originating in Singapore. Tour group uses QATAR.

SIN->DOH-> VIE
ZUR->DOH->SIN

Not expecting anything because tour group would book the cheapest EY tickets possible.
But upon check in, they took my MPC number and I was awarded with 30 club point and 3,000 mile, both sectors in total. Not bad.

The icing on the cake is both of us were op-up to J at DOH->SIN sector, totally pleasantly surprised. I guess the MPC Gold is quite worthwhile.

Thank you, CX and QR.

Your AA membership doesn't count for anything when doing Asia Miles upgrades, that's not right. Asia Miles reps are notorious on here for telling people stupid things that aren't right.

I don't know how to interpret that....cheapo PEY sold out, but I fare also only 2 seats left. I guess it looks good?

Fwiw it seems like from people posting here, PEY generally has the best odds of op-ups, and by extension I would think PEY->biz Asia Miles upgrades should have a decent chance. The reason is the PEY cabin tends to be elite (in-particular CX elite) light.
