I don't think you're right. I *think* the runway this aircraft used was 25L, which is south of 24L and is shown partially constructed in the photo you provided.

Correction: I had it backward. 24L is correct, the northern runway is 24R, and the northernmost runway (parallel to Derry Rd.) is 23.

YYZ doesn't have a 25L.

They landed on 24L which is one of the ones built a few years ago. Winds were about 350@25G35, which I suspect would be close to the maximum Xwind component of the plane. Visibility at the time was 1 1/4 in Heavy thunderstorms.

AC1166 YVR-YYZ was near the BC/AB border and returned to YVR.

Congrats to the cabin crew for the safe evac.
Who was recently writing in a thread that their job has little do with safety? Couldn't have been me

I'm not sure about that. On my highlighted runway it says "24R" (why 'R'?). I'm not sure how old this image is.

Such a relief, when I saw the first pics I expected the worst. Great evacuation job by the crew. Evacuating nearly 300 persons with flames all around with no fatalities and a handfull of minor injuries is something truly exeptional!!! ^ ^

Looks they got a massive power failure (unconfirmed of course) also very uncommon for this type of modern airliner.

It's 24L (left), the new runway added to the existing 24R. I was confused. The runway in question is the one still under construction on your photo.

tracon, if the winds were at 350 degrees and the aircraft landed on runway 24, the winds would have been more than 90 degrees off the right side of the aircraft? And is "25G35" actually 25 knots gusting to 35 knots? Pretty stiff cross wind?

I live about 6 miles south of the airport, and I can tell you it was one heck of a storm; we had about an inch of rain in a half hour. Massive lightening.

My 11 year old often listens to Toronto air traffic control, and we noticed right around this time that the broadcasts had gone silent.

GTAA.com shows all flights tonite cancelled or diverted...

Safety investigator on his way.

Hi guys. I have had the call and will probably be heading out that way tomorrow. It would be useful if you could dig out the odd fact before I leave.

I have got the picture from a few posts earlier. Thank you.

Can anybody confirm the flight carried straight on after the runway, rather than sliding off the side? It is a completely different type of cause the "Carry on" as opposed to the "Sideslide".

Is that a perimeter track just before the gully with the river in it?

All information appreciated. Does anybody have the length of the tarmac available to them, my books are not at home with me at the moment. I am trying to work out the actual distance of overrun.

Any ideas if it went through the localiser antennae.

It would appear the Airbus 340 curved off the runway at the end, rather than crash into the landing lights which were shown totally in place on TV.

Thank God there were no losses on this crash. This is a miracle.
