On another note, the Days Inn at YVR has lowered their rates from $600 to ~$450. I guess the more competition the better.
I am a bit surprised about the downtown hotels being allowed because they are further away than the maximum distance which was previously considered in the requirement listing. I suppose they are ramping up and expecting more travelers. What concerns me is that they are going at this for the long haul. There are so few travelers right now that there would almost not be any reasonable concentration of guests in these properties at all that were in quarantine.

Having just finished my quarantine (well - 2.5 hours left) on my next visit I would absolutely refuse the hotel and basically say - go ahead and fine me - and just never pay it.

This whole process was a total farce - and as a Canadian - I am totally embarrassed at the total incompetence of the government(s) - not because they can't run a proper quarantine program - but because they continue to implement a blanket quarantine requirement without any attempt at risk based measures. At least if there was some type of numerical / scientific or risk- based view - I would be ok with it - even if it meant I was negatively subject to it . . but then again why would I expect anything different from this government? I guess the math taught in drama class was not very challenging so we will stay with the current program indefinitely.

No. You are not a regular hotel guest. You are still in quarantine. You are still required to quarantine for the full 14 days which means you stay in, don’t leave your home (or room), don’t interact with anyone and don’t go out in public. You can leave to go straight to your place of quarantine once you receive your negative result but that’s it.

yeah... it does feel like this bs is not going to go away anytime soon. i'm hoping that it will go away late july, once everyone who wants to has gotten their first shot, but i would not be surprised if it went beyond that.

My prediction is Labour Day to kill off any fun summer European travel plans.

As long as the hotel doesn't make you stay so miserable that you want to leave as soon as you can...
If you've paid for the room for three nights then you can stay three nights. If the hotel wants the room then they can proffer a refund.

They did not ask. They also did not have any security and I really could have left the moment I checked in.

Does anyone know what happens if one tests positive after arriving at an approved hotel? I've been following a poster on Reddit who did test positive, called PHAC with no reply, and has now stopped posting. Just curious if she was transferred to another facility, etc but I haven't seen any reports of what happens next.

Just got out of our mandatory hotel quarantine...Marriott YUL (in Terminal)

Very adequate rooms, ordered food from outside and a wine bottle from the hotel. Nothing to complain about service and quality of the accommodation provided.

Got the test results in few hours and spent only one night. They claimed we will only be charged for one night and will credit the other 2...waiting to see if this will be confirmed on my credit card in the next hours

If you've received a positive test, stay in your room. A Public Health Agency of Canada official will call you with instructions. You'll be required to isolate for 14 days from when the sample was collected. This will be in either a federal designated quarantine facility or other suitable location

And she apparently followed those guidelines, but did not hear back from PHAC in the two days after testing positive, nor did she have any instructions what to do. She's stopped posting which leads me to assume that she was either transferred, or is in a 'suitable location' ie same hotel? But who pays? If she does resurface and report back, I'll share the outcome as that seems to still be a question mark in the process.

What's supposed to happen and what actually happens are not always the same thing but anyone who tests positive is then transferred to another facility for the balance of their 14-day quarantine stay at the government's expense. And yes, this could be why they've stopped posting for now.

Is there a security guard outside of the terminal to watch me get on a shuttle bus or take a taxi? I arrive at the airport at midnight. My mom wants to drop me off dinner before I take the shuttle since the hotel won't have any food at that hour. Do you think that will be ok? Her other suggestion is to drive me to the hotel since people have mentioned waiting a long time for the shuttle. Is that also ok? Thanks!

If when you ask if it would be ok you mean it would be legal, the answer is clearly no. The idea is, indeed, to test you and get the results before you have any contact with anyone who is leaving in Canada and live with you or would visit you.
If you ask if you can get away with it, well, it is possible, since there are few, if any control and you can walk to the parking and take your car. If you chose to meet your mom anyway (which I would not recommend since it is illegal), please keep a good mask (like a well adjusted surgical mask or a N95), ask your mom to wear a good mask as well and keep your distance as much as you can. If you got a positive test later you would certainly be in a big trouble if you got a close contact with a relative when you were not supposed to. You don't want to be the guy the news would talk about to justify a stricter quarantine program with military escort to the room like in some countries...

At YVR there is a security guard outside international arrivals.
What they are looking for, I don't know. Let's just say, pre hotel quarantine they weren't there.
Maybe your food could be left at the front desk of the hotel for you to grab on check in?

Feds looking to add more quarantine hotels...

Exclamation

Folks, after deleting a few posts let's stick to keeping this thread as informative as possible with useful updates and first-hand experiences rather than running lengthy debates about the optics of this program and/or the rational for its implementation.
