(3/17/2020) CNN and CBC are both reporting that there are talks between the US and Canada to close the border, including the land border. Everyone would be banned from crossing, even for cross border same day shopping, regardless of citizenship. There reportedly would be an exception for truckers and essential travel, such as health care workers who live on one side of the border and work on the other side.

It is reported that there may be an announcement as early as Wednesday, 3/18/2020. Even if it doesn't come into effect for a few days, I wouldn't wait until the last day because there are always a chance of a car accident resulting in a totaled car or an injury requiring hospitalization.

Get to your chosen side of the border as soon as possible.

Official now. Essential traffic only allowed to cross Canada-U.S. border.

Did they announce whether or not Canadians will still be able to return home?

And when exactly this suspension comes into effect?

Canadians are able to return home. If you present yourself at the land border, as aCanadian citizen you cannot be refused.

Effective date have not been determined.

Article above current as of 18MAR noon Eastern.

The Prime Minister's Office said they are still negotiating the start date and will have it "soon."

I stand corrected. I thought I had read something about tonight in the Globe.

Should be yes because under current rules, foreign nationals (example: German) can transit Canada.

Many thanks! ^

Family member is trying to fly XXX-HKG-YVR-SEA but CX won't book him on it. They're saying it's not allowed.

What is arrival times? Maybe US preclearance is closed when CX flight arrive requiring an entry into Canada instead of a transit.

I think last flight YVR-SEA is 2010. Pre-clearance closes at 2030.
