I would not pay for seat selection with availability looking how it is. I would however be sure to check in online at exactly 24 hours prior to departure.
Enjoy your first flight in CW. ^

If looking at what's for sale/seating in Club:
BA9 on 9th Jan F6 A5 J9 C9 D9 R9 I9 W9 E0 T0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V0 S0 N0 Q0 O0 G0
- Lower deck wide open except 18J, and 20E (which is blocked)
- Upper deck wide open, except 60B, 60J, 60K, and 64A, 64K
BA10 on 3rd Feb F8 A7 J9 C9 D9 R9 I9 W9 E0 T0 Y9 B9 H9 K9 M9 L9 V9 S9 N9 Q9 O9 G9
- Lower deck wide open except 20E
- Upper deck shows 60B/J/K, 61J, 62A/K, and 64A/K as occupied/blocked
Hope this helps!

Many thanks in advance!!
Also, I know the advice is to check in online and not print boarding pass before flying from heathrow, but is it the same at the outstations?

Welcome to FT kenstar. ^
The big question is what do these number actually mean for loads. If BA is heavily overselling in Y (I note that N and below are closed) maybe there will be a very full flight with upgrades galore.
On the other hand perhaps it will be wide open (availability in S and above is 9 or more).
J6 and W7, out of 24 seats in each cabin, so perhaps 70%-75% load at the moment. Who knows how many bookings and cancellations there will be in the next two days though...
