If you go to Madison then I would stop at any of the excellent restaurants on the Capitol Square - The Old Fashioned is a great place for a decent burger, and most bars/restaurants will have a ton of local beer on tap. Afterwards wander down State Street to the U of Wisconsin Union and hang out by the lake with a pitcher of beer and watch whatever free entertainment they have going on and enjoy the scene.
Driving back to Chicago be careful of the speed traps on 94 around the Dells or anything on the WI side. Im not sure IL state police ever nailed anyone for speeding, but WI side will.
