Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post #4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread, MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

Nope - and it can be done:

Monday 10pm LHR-DXB
Tuesday DXB-CGK
Wednesday CGK-DXB
Thursday 2am DXB-LHR landing back first thing in the morning.

Obviously the above relies on a b2b at CGK, which is doable if you're quick and they're friendly.

The routing rules for the current BA INCEU60 fare (AMS-TPE) also allow travel via SIN and HKG, i.e. AMS-LON-SIN-3K/CX/KA-HKG-BA/CX/KA-TPE giving 40 + 160 + 40 + 40 = 280 TP each way.

I booked a xmas/new year trip to Tampa ex-DUB, with BA sectors on the dub-lhr bits and AA for the rest, it's an AA ticket too but guessed many here would have plenty of experience when AA schedule changes can mess around with a planned itinerary.

Basically, how flexible are AA to me now going back to them to route it a different way with different airports, or should a good deal come available in the next 6 weeks or so would they allow me to just cancel and refund it (as it wasn't that cheap in the first place tbh).

Outbound has stayed pretty much same and is fine, however coming back I'm doing TPA-CLT-JFK-LHR-DUB. I was hoping originally to do the TATL sector from either DFW or MIA on the 77W but couldn't get it to price out, so would AA be open to me changing the routing slightly to something like TPA-MIA-DFW-LHR-DUB or maybe TPA-CLT-MIA-LHR-DUB ? The changes made are that I am now leaving TPA at 10:13am rather than 11:52am which is actually very inconvenient for my plans. I also now have 4hrs at JFK rather than the original 90mins, and I also now only have 90mins at LHR landing at T3 to get over and make the flight to DUB from T5, rather than the original 130mins.

Just wanted to have an idea of what I probably could or couldn't ask them for, before giving them a call, as if they are usually flexible and open to changes I'll look into a preferred itinerary to give them before I call so I have all flight numbers etc ready

Hello Frequent-Flyers and others :-)

Unfortunately my last business flight this year was cancled, leaving me 125TPs short of Silver and my Collection Year ends 05.11.

I am based in HAJ (but can do HAM too) and was planing to position to LHR in the morning (5TPs economy with part pay avios) and then do sth like:

This woud leave me with 125TPs, exactly what I need and I would use a few more Avios for LHR>HAJ. Now this leaves me with a couple questions you guys might be able to help me with.

1.) First of all, any better ideas?

2.) Changing from LHR to LGW is not fun I have heard but 12 hrs should be more than doable on the first leg but on the way back it leaves me with an overnight stay in LON. Any suggestions for a good and cheap hotel, if the latter is actually possible in London?

3.) The way I d like to book I have to stay at MAD over night but I have read that the Lounge is open 24hrs and they have areas for a short nap. Does anyone have experiences with it?

4.) I tried to route back from BCN via MAD to HAM, but this will almost double the price. Any ideas on this part, as it would save me an extra flight, the corresponding avios and give me still enough TPs?

Sorry for all the questions and thank you all in advance. I've read a lot in this forum and now I am simply trying to make it to silver for the first time.

Regards, Maze

If you did the same days, but one week later you could fly HAM-MAD-LIS and back for £464. That would net you 160 tier points.

The Sri Lankan DXB to CGK seems to conk out around 12 December, but I went fishing and found AUH to BKK widely available on Sir Lankan in January for £739. Fare seems to not have a date range although most of December is blacked out. AUH to CGK was there for £932 and AUH to KUL for £928. MCT to CGK also there in Jan for £896. 560 TPs for £1.31? Needs to be sold in the UAE but I'm sure the combined wisdom on here has figured out how to do that?

EDIT - only 40tps from CMB to BKK even though its 2,400 kms…

Looks like a good price to me. Note though that your MAD-BCN domestic flight will depart from T4 in Madrid and the Iberia lounge there is currently closed for refurbishment. It's supposed to reopen 'mid October' but no guarantees. In any case it closes at 23.00 (the T4S lounge is open 24 hrs but this won't be of any help). There is a Priority Pass / Lounge Club / payment lounge in T4 but that also closes overnight.

Can you not access the T4S lounge when travelling MAD-BCN?

Thanks for the hint. I missed that Velazque is in T4S. But same question as thomasd21: I ve read that T4S is for international flights, so i can use it on the the way TO LGW but not in the other direction when I arrive in MAD?

You may try the Hilton Garden Inn London Heathrow Airport at Hatton Cross. They are just a few stops on the tube from LHR. Usually you can get a room for around GBP 65 for Sundays.

T4S is for international flights to non-Schengen countries which includes your flight to LGW. T4 is for Schengen countries and Spanish domestic destinations. There are a couple of exceptions to this, but that's the general rule. The official line is that you need a T4S boarding pass to enter the Velazquez lounge - assuming you can get through exit passport control to get there in the first place, my guess is that you'd be turned away at the lounge door, but somebody on the Iberia board might be able to answer this better than me. Try this thread Iberia lounges at Madrid Barajas (T4/T4S)

Good luck with your trip!

If you just want a quick crash pad for the night, the Thistle Heathrow T5 is currently GBP 52 for the night you want. It's connected to T5 via the parking pods which is fun / convenient (depending on how you see it) - the hotel charges GBP 5 each way for the journey, per person. The hotel is nothing fancy but it's clean, efficient and comfortable. It also has a bar and terrace with good views over the airport.
