After much speculation BA has confirmed the launch of non-stop flights from Heathrow to New Orleans (MSY) from 27 March 2017.

Service will initially run 4x weekly on 3-class 787-8 aircraft:

BA225 LHR 1540 – 1940 MSY 788 Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat
BA224 MSY 2120 – 1200+1 LHR 788 Mon, Wed, Fri, Sat

Lounge arrangements (if any) at MSY are yet to be confirmed.

Could this be the CTU 787-8 that's becoming available?

Interesting thought. Now I have to work out the best/multi-sector routing ex-DUB with AA

Just to remind people getting excited, there was a similar degree of certainty about the new Jakarta flight that never happened..

Just saying... (long and thin route?!)

That got close but fell at the regulatory hurdle of a disinterested Indonesian government.

Also worth noting another 787-8 is due for delivery in SEP17.

BA cutting the Chengdu route may resuscitate this one.

Or the one on the later PHL service that's now cancelled and that AA have replaced?

We'll see. I am still puzzled at the appeal of New Orleans, since it's a non-hub destination. Maybe another experiment like Chengdu was.

Not to mention a runway that cannot support the weight of fully fuelled aircraft ...

Well, that's not completely true... the runway can support the weight of a fully fuelled aircraft if it's a 747, A380 and pretty much anything else. The only thing it cannot support is a fully fuelled 777-300W due to the stress it puts on the undercarriage (the weight is all on fewer supports compared to 747/380). And like New Orleans, Jakarta is sinking so it's not easily fixed

Anyway, despite knowing about it for years, can you guess what airplane the national carrier bought to fly to Europe non-stop (thus LHR-CGK-SIN-LHR routing).

I'm not sure if this would impact the 787 - I don't think so.

Strange comment!

If the only attraction of a "hub" is its ability to get you to the other places that people actually want to go, then why not fly to those places directly?

New Orleans is such a place. It's a place people actually want to go to.

Indeed. The partner hubs are all covered anyway. It's new spokes that are needed.

If this (or indeed another new route is announced..) do the 2 J Reward seats appear instantly for each travel date?
