Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

It means a non-stop flight, which helps the ITA fairies cranking the query to discard routes of two or more sectors between the points.

Putting 'f' there would allow direct flights (ie, stopping at an intermediate point on the same flight number) to be considered as well, and IIRC just listing the routing points would additionally look for connecting flights (on different flight numbers).

ITA will return potentially misleading results if you don't help it discard 'fluff' sometimes. For example, if I put ANC,HNL,OGG (plus the other two Hawaii stations that elude me at the mo...) for the destination then I get fares at ~£4000 because the cheaper ones aren't found fast enough, but ITA still wants to return something.

That long list of East Coast stations is a bit ambitious as it gives the fairies a lot of things to look at in the time available, but works in this case. If the fare results that came back were higher than expected / wanted then trimming that down to 3 or 4 at a time would be my next step, and / or using things like '/ maxdur' and '/ maxconnect' to discard overly leisurely routes (BTW, they become '; max...' if used with '/ alliance ...').

Thanks lorcancoyle !

I forgot about the Europe options. Aside from Malta, what other "good ones" are there ?

Yes, it's also TATL I'm looking at... I'm in London and could depart from any of the airports here, or DUB, or other. I'm going into BUF, will drive to YYZ and return to LHR (or other). Looking at ITA Matrix, I probably should have sorted these bookings in January

Having very limited knowledge about the routes available are you looking at something that starts in BUF and ends in YYZ? Could see something for 370 TPs if you did domestic F from BUF, a 2000 mile route in F, domestic F and international business back to YYZ (60+210+60+40)

Maybe give ITA a go on your dates for something like BUF-CLT/WAS-LAS-ORD-YYZ?

I've still been tracking an exDUB HNL run since booking my own one when the sale was on.

This might be of use to you: http://goo.gl/flights/QBwe

DUB-JFK-LAX-HNL-LAX-JFK-DUB - £1446.24

It's not booking into the best TP efficient way, but might give you a starting point to work with

Hi there, looked on ITAMatrix site, selected outbound 22/12 + / - 2 days, return 25/12 + / - 2 days. I suspect not many people will be doing those flights on Christmas Eve & Christmas Day. Just read that PHX & HNL airports / lounges don't have showers, so that makes for a lot of flying with no washing! Still, it will be an experience!!

Karfa,
As the font of all knowledge, where might I search to find help on prepping for my epic journey? My whole trip is done in 60 hours, with an overnight in a hotel at the start in JFK, but from there onwards, non-stop till I'm back in DUB. Other than my travel pillow, babywipes and aspirin, I keen to know what else I might pack (at least I'll be hand baggage only!!

Are ex CPH/OSL currently the best options for going East (China)? I need to go there in May and would like to maximise TP earning power.

I am planning a holiday to Brazil and was wondering if I would be able to do some extra routing to maximize TPs. The best I came up with was Europe-JFK-MIA-Sao Paulo.

Would you guys know any other creative routing I could use?

Thanks!

I would say essential items for me would be (apologies as some of these will be obvious):
Toiletries
Pain killers
Earplugs
Eye mask
Pyjamas and socks for overnight long haul flights
Few changes of shirt/socks/underwear
Headphones
iPad with lots to watch
Book or other stuff to read/do
Laptop
Various adaptors and charges
Prints of all tickets & travel insurance docs
Passport
Camera

That's probably it, there is something I have probably forgotten to list. Basically enough to keep me amused and changes of clothes. All easily doable as carry on only.

This thread has been documenting some good prices Ex-EU to South America via the USA, but yes you're probably on the best options there - most of the cheap AA fares will go via MIA and/or JFK.

For anyone interested, I've just booked a couple of TP runs that I needed to get to Gold before 8th April, so have tacked these on to my exCPH HNL run (not fantastic TP value, but I'm running out of time)

16FEB | £2.02/TP | £242 | 120 | LGW-MAD-BCN-MAD-LHR | I/I/I/I/I | expedia.co.uk | IB/BA (12th/13th March). Managed to book the A330 w/lie flats for the BCN-MAD leg, which I'm happy about (albeit for a short flight).

16FEB | £2.92/TP | £701 | 240 | LHR-HEL-ARN-HEL-LHR | I/I/I/I/I | priceline.com | AY (19th Feb - day trip immediate turnaround). Again, managed to book the A340 w/lie flats for the LHR-HEL leg. Seems like AY run an A340 on Mondays & Fridays.

Does anyone have any tips on a HEL-ARN-HEL immediate turnaround?

Just to summarise what it took to book these, I toyed with Matrix and Google Flights for a good amount of time, trying to get the itinerary that I wanted, but booking them was more problematic. Each OTA I tried didn't give me exactly what I saw on GF or Matrix, and AY's website is pretty dire. Not wanting to call, I found something called ITA Matrix Power Tools, which if I'm honest is genuinely genius! It allows you to go to multiple OTA's and check out if you can book the itinerary that you've found on GF/Matrix through them...

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...serscript.html - It covers several well known OTA's, which are a bit US centric, however, also links into Farefreaks (which I have just discovered), which then allows you to go to Expedia, Opodo etc on multiple countries sites - which is how I booked the MAD/BCN trip.

Not to clutter this thread, but i'd recommend it for people (like myself) who are new to the TP thanggg and want to make life easier booking these awesome/obscure routes

^ I've enjoyed playing with it as well. Very useful for quickly exploring where you can find to book an itinerary.
