Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

Very very weird to see F7 A0 P7 on EF, on every Hawaii flight I looked at in summer.

Is it necessary for you to travel exDUB? I've been trying to price up something similar to you, but using using the exCPH fare, which allows stopovers for €75. Whilst I had no luck with the fare that allowed stopovers, I managed to get the following to price at £1254 under ILN7S4Z1 on several dates in July, August and November. Availability in March/April seems to be more limited (based on the few searches I ran), but I found this:

This would be 1360 TP as opposed to the 1200 from Dublin. It's no good for me, as I'm looking for something that allows me to stopover in NYC on the way back (and I'm not in a hurry to do the run), but it seems like it might be what you're looking for...

Dates for the fare:
PERMITTED 21MAR 16 THROUGH 15APR 16 OR 22JUN 16 THROUGH
04SEP 16 OR 19NOV 16 THROUGH 30NOV 16 OR 23DEC 16 THROUGH
02JAN 17 ON THE OUTBOUND TRANSATLANTIC SECTOR.
Hi Bobbin - thanks for this!

I looked at exCPH as well, but couldn't find this type of fare, so that's great. I might play about with the flights a little as I'd ideally like to get into JFK earlier to meet up with some friends

Much appreciated!

The consensus is, A is used for upgrades, and AA wants to limit upgrades on some routes.

No problem. Just out of interest, is there a reason you wanted to do the run before the end of your tier point collection year? Surely then, you'd get the gold benefits for just over a year, whereas if you waited a few days until your new tier point year, you'd get them for almost two years. Or am I misunderstanding how this all works...?

Thanks for following up! Since it seems to be unlikely that BA will start to allow P in its fare rules, and even more unlikely that AA will have a change of heart over A availability, seems I'll be booking my AA-fare with BA later today.

Shame about the lost Avios!

Excuse my ignorance on various fare classes, but why the concern at the lack of A class availability on the AA > HNL flights. If P is available, according to the BA online calculator it awards the same avios and TP's regardless of A or P fare class, so what have I missed?

Thanks

Not sure this is correct - for example A class is still showing as available on all the AA premium trans-continentals I look at over the same period e.g. LAX -JFK or SFO -JFK which AA does not like to let go for AA Advantage upgrades. The decision to zero out A class was taken within the last week as I have printouts showing Matrix quotes from 22nd Jan which use A class extensively on Hawaiian flights to HNL,OGG and KOA. I think there is something else going on here.

For business class fares,it forces you to use an AA filed transatlantic fare code which means less Avios - the amount less will be substantial as you cannot use BA codeshare AA flights. TPs will remain the same.

For First class transatlantic fares it has the same effect on Avios but an even worse effect on the price which shoots up from £2800 ex Dub to £4200 or even higher.

It needs to be borne in mind that what is on offer with A class upgrades on AA is a 1 cabin upgrade to First using miles or a SWU so on the transcons that will be from J while on the 2 class services it is from Y. As a result, IME there tends to be good availability on the 3 class services but less so on the popular 2 class routes.

I have no idea what's going on and tend to concur with Calchas that it might just be AA wanting to restrict upgrades on certain routes but I do wonder if there are more suprises for AAdvantage members on the way. If I was AA and was considering upping the mileage requirement for upgrades in the near future, I wouldn't be over generous with opportunities in the meantime.

Or am I misunderstanding how this all works...?
Good point. My interpretation of the TP process was that if you don't get the specified number of TP's in a TP year, you would have to restart the whole process to gain status. So in my case, I would have to get another 1500 TP's if I go past 8th April. If it doesn't work like this, it would be great.

Anyone have any advice on this...?

Correct. However, you're looking to get the vast majority of those points in one trip.

If you do the trip before the end of your year, the 100 TPs you have right now will count towards your status (but you'll need to do another run to hit the 1500 in time - a 200 TP run if your HNL trip gets 1200) - and your status will only last until 8th April 2017.

If you do the trip at the start of the next membership year, you will be starting from 0, so the additional TP run you need to do becomes more of an issue - requiring 300 TP and not 200 TP. BUT, once you hit 1500 TPs, you'll get Gold all of the current membership year and the next one - i.e. until 8th April 2018.

Your choice...

You're quite correct that your TP reset at the end of your collection year. However given some of these runs (eg DUB-HNL) give the major chunk (1,200 out of 1,500 or 80%) of what is required for Gold, many of us prefer to do the run at the start of a new TP year, thus locking in status for the remainder of that year and the following one. Of course if you're doing a shorter run and have almost accrued enough to get the status you're aiming for then it makes sense to squeeze it in before the end of the year to trigger status.

Don't know if this is relevant or not to the 'A' class discussion, but here goes. I am doing a HNL Run/Holiday soon and had some changes made. My flight coming back from HNL to LAX is now a BA codeshare, 'BA 1638'. It is in F class, so gets the best of both worlds. 210 TP's and more avios as booked under BA. I don't if this is potentially an option to request on the phone instead of 'A' class under an American code. I could be way off here but thought it was maybe worth mentioning. Cheers
