Upgrading Using Avios (UUA)
Summary guide to bookings which can be upgraded with Avios:
  • BA issued tickets (can include other carriers) ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with only BA flights ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with other carriers

  • Some TP runs can be booked online at aa.com. Be sure to use the Sort by schedule option in order to locate the exact flights you found on the ITA Matrix tool.

What dates are you looking to travel on? How many TPs are you after? Have you had a go at pricing anything up on either ITA matrix or aa.com?

Not spectacular, but was looking for a long weekend away and got LHR-HEL return in CE for £376 - £2.35 per TP. Had been looking at economy fares and Finnair (including a BA operated flight) had some very good fares - but additional 120 TPs for c. £200 (I was not going for a 730 am departure as fare saving offset by taxi cost) and no additional flying time to put me 200 TPs off two GUF1s with 2 months of membership year remaining made it attractive. Avoids probable need for a last minute LGW-AMS run in November!

Combine with some nice Hilton offers for 3 nights and I'm very happy

That HEL run has been fairly reliable for me over the last few months and has consistently been at £376. I think I have done it twice or three times since the start of the year. Apart from sale fares and POUGs, I think that is the cheapest way to earn 160 TPs exUK. If you combine it with domestic connections you get a further 40 TPs and it costs around £470 I think.

I have also done a JER-LGW/LHR-HEL-LHR/LGW-JER run which comes in at just under £400 for 240 TPs, plus another 80TPs if you manage to get a decent price/POUG for your positioning flight to JER.

In fact if you get your timings right you can do your LGW to LHR connection by nesting in LGW-AMS and AMS-LHR tickets rather than getting the coach for a possible 400 TPs in one weekend. I did this back in June although wasn't able to POUG AMS-LHR so only got 370 TPs as discussed here.

you have awakened my curiosity and desire to continue to learn....

what are DONEx fares? a mini-master-class would be great

Round the world oneworld fares in business (D class), x means the number of continents you touch. I think the minimum is 3.

I've always been curious about these. had a look a few years ago (probably many years ago) but couldn't find an obvious way of pricing them.

is there a better tool / site / way of pricing on of these? and/or how much is a RWT in J with OW along 'standard routes' (i.e. nothing too fancy complicated)?

Apart from the website mentioned and an excellent OW board on FT you can get some idea of fares from Expert Flyer. Just put the same location as both your departing and arriving airport. What you will find is how much the fare varies dependent upon where you purchase the ticket. As I'm sure you'll know, the fare is before taxes/charges.

I'm by no means an expert but I did take quite a detailed look at these RTW fares and concluded that there were much more efficient ways of gathering TP's. Of course, they weren't intended to be!

That's a pretty good summary of it. There's often certain places in the world that are better for starting the fare to get better pricing. Historically that has been New Zealand and South Africa for example.

There are a few threads in the oneworld forum: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/oneworld-411/
Including: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/onewo...cket-faqs.html

The base fare depends on the origin, then add taxes/fees/charges for each segment to determine the final price.
