Upgrading Using Avios (UUA)
Summary guide to bookings which can be upgraded with Avios:
  • BA issued tickets (can include other carriers) ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with only BA flights ^
  • TA issued (on BA stock) booking with other carriers

  • Some TP runs can be booked online at aa.com. Be sure to use the Sort by schedule option in order to locate the exact flights you found on the ITA Matrix tool.

I thought the same... Then I wondered if it was meant to be read as the cash fare on QR was only slightly more than the taxes and fees on the BA OB redemption? Not sure

They are not, so I don't see the point in making a detour on OB-tickets.

Sorry. Booked OB J plus upgrade with points.
Do you mean you booked J with cash and upgraded to F with OB points? I think this works like booking J and doing a UuA with avios to F, so you get the TPs and avios for the underlying J cash booking.

PUJ being Punta Cana in Dominican Republic for those that fancy some sunshine and somewhere different!
I had a play about with this one earlier today and it seems to similarly price up around the £600 mark for quite a few of the AA exMIA destinations. In particular, the ones that would be recommended would be SJU, STX, and STT since they are US territory so when you fly back to MIA you do not have to go through passport control. Immigration at MIA is a nightmare from all the stories I have heard and it makes it very difficult to guess what length of connection time you need to leave for MIA. With a incoming flight from SJU, STT, or STX you do not have that problem and can confidently book a short connection.

I need 660 TPs by the end of February 2015, with my preferred travel dates being between Oct. 15-Nov. 10 or after January 10. As a newbie to the TP running thing, I am having trouble replicating the fares posted on the wiki when I try them on AA.com. How are others doing this? I am coming up with fares that are multiples of £640...
I used random dates in November and checked through aa.co.uk website. You need to use the 'Multi City' booking page and make sure that you click the First class option (with restrictions) I would also add that because of the schedule you need to night-stop in LAX on the PUJ-MIA-LAX-LAS journey. I've just tried again now and the fare is definitely there! Let me know how you get on.

You need to purchase the cheapest flight that earns you enough tier points and then go to the airport and travel on those flights.

Choose from one of the many detailed in this thread, or hunt around for destinations you would like to travel to. There is a handy calculator on the BA site that tells you how many tier points a flight will earn, but in general the first and business class ones provide the greatest bang for your buck.

The answer you have received is right but let me offer some thoughts!

From London, there are four main good ways to do TP running:

1) Find a relatively cheap destination earning decent TPs for a single sector (which implies business class), and go back and forward a few times (RAK, MLA, JER and AMS have all been relatively cheap on a per-TP basis in the past - in general, flights in Club out of LGW tend to beat those out of LHR or LCY on a TP-value basis)

2) Get to a continental destination and do an "interesting" routing to another one, through London, but with the same criteria as the above - this should get more TPs so you might only need to do it once or twice to earn in the low hundreds (JER-MLA and JER-AMS are the classics here)

3) Look for a routing with several stops on (partly or completely) partner metal - the classic are the US-bound flights from the continent, especially the good old Hawaii run, but QR flights towards Asia count. These tend to be for people looking to earn in the 800+ TP range

4) Position yourself in the US and do a fully contained TP run across the US continent / down the East Coast. Of course best if you will find yourself there anyway, but sometimes very cheap positioning flights are possible... these tend to provide the best TP-value in their own right, but you have to get to the start line...

HTH.

Sounds like a great run and reasonable too..
Do these type of routes have to be booked on AA.com or BA.com?
I'm new to this TP run and have just under 1k to collect. I've god vacation time beginning September and want to use the time to retain.
Are there any high earning TP runs using the Mid/Far East with BA/QR within a reasonable budget? I'd be booking J or F. Mainly want to retain my GCH, took me a long time to get there and I wish to retain it.
The US trips mentioned, are there minimum stays etc and if so, may I ask where are all these rules/guidelines held?

Appreciate all you experts advice and suggestions..

I've just priced up the GCM-HNL route for Mar 2015 and since I'm going to be in MIA at that time, I had to include a positioning flight as well. This is what I found:

  • The GCM-HNL TP run is priced at about £880 for 920TPs as previously suggested
  • Getting to GCM from MIA is very expensive in comparison - in economy it is about £330 which would create a further 20TPs each way (I think), and in business it goes up to about £440. So this positioning leg makes it a lot more expensive
  • However you can tag the whole lot together on a business class ticket, which gives you some level of assurance - you can book MIA-GCM-MIA-LAX-HNL-LAX-MIA-GCM-MIA on aa.com for £1,223 and 1,000 TPs - not quite as good a £/TP but at least you get the whole lot on a single PNR

Quick question - I just had a TP run which involved the routing LHR-YYZ (BA) and then YYZ-LAX (AA) (both on business) so was originally netting me 280 TPS (I set the routing up deliberately that way for the points rather than fly direct to LAX).

Unfortunately the first sector was delayed by 6 hours+ and BA rebooked my on the direct LAX flight so I have only got 140 tier points although I did get to fly on the A380 .

I have seen some other posts about original routing credit when booked on to a non-BA flight but can I claim the additional tier points in this case? Thanks in advance!
