I wouldn't let the chance or not of an opup determine how you make your bookings. I prefer all my party on one booking in case of irrops. I've been upgraded on a few flights when travelling alone, my wife with no status has been upgraded with me when we flew to Athens last year, on other occassions I've been upgraded and wife and teenagers weren't and on one occasion all 4 of us were upgraded, again with only me with status so as Calchas has said, opups are a peculiar science.

Not sure if already mentioned but another good run on American in first class. GCM-MIA-LAX-HNL return is around £880 pounds and nets 920 tier points. Roughly £0.95/TP.

Thanks for the replies so assuming 1 of us Gold and the other silver and the one on silver very rarely, if it all, travels on own, is the additional £300 worth paying to get them to Gold.
I have been reading a lot lately that being Gold doesnt even help in situations where you are maybe flying PEC and no Avios upgrades available then when the flight is overbooked, the system doesnt even recognise you are gold and upgrades randomly.
Just dont want to fork out £300 for it if my gold status is going to stand us in the same stead. Getting to silver each year is not a problem incidentally so the soft landing isnt too great a benefit in this case.

If it were me, I'd probably go for it. but that doesnt mean it makes rational sense for you (or even me). I enjoy flying, earning TPs, and have spent quite a bit of personal money on pure TP flights this year so my 'value system' when it comes to TPs, status and flying is not aligned with the average person that I try to explain it to.
You can also think about it in 'opportunity cost' terms (that's how I talk myself into some of my runs etc): if £300 is the equivalent of a week's holiday for you and you'd prefer saving for it, it's more questionable than when you think "that's a few nice meals out and why not".

I managed to secure return BA F to SIN using OB points. For slightly more (expensive ticket anyway) I could route LHR-DOH-SIN-DOH-LHR on QR. The LHR sectors in F and SIN sectors in J (one on 787), so F-J-J-F. For slightly less than BA I could go J-J-J-F. Either option secures substantially more TP than BA, however half the miles..... Better to just go direct or would you go for the TP and connection risk and flying J v F? The extra TP could potentially put me over 3000 at year-end to start accruing for CCR I suppose and would definitely get the GUF2.

I managed to secure return BA F to SIN using OB points. For slightly more (expensive ticket anyway) I could route LHR-DOH-SIN-DOH-LHR on QR. The LHR sectors in F and SIN sectors in J (one on 787), so F-J-J-F. For slightly less than BA I could go J-J-J-F. Either option secures substantially more TP than BA, however half the miles..... Better to just go direct or would you go for the TP and connection risk and flying J v F? The extra TP could potentially put me over 3000 at year-end to start accruing for CCR I suppose and would definitely get the GUF2.
