Quick question (hopefully): If I gift another individual a Gold BAEC membership at the end of April 2024 (this year), under the new tier point scheme, does that person have Gold until the end of April 2025 (current TP year awarded only) or the end of April 2026 (current TP year awarded plus one year). Thanks for any assistance.

Here is our situation given yesterday’s tier point year changes — I wanted to keep this out of the main thread since it’s specific to GGL, but would appreciate a second pair of eyes to make sure our understanding is correct:
If the partner cards don’t organically make enough for Gold, which sometimes happens, here is our plan:
- Person A: GGL. TP year end 08 Jun 2024. Card expiration 31 Jul 2025. (Not sure why 2025)
- Person B: Organic Gold or Partner Gold. TP year end 08 Nov 2024. Card expiration 31 Dec 2024.
- Person C: Organic Gold or Partner Gold. TP year end 08 Feb 2024. Card expiration 31 Mar 2024.
- Person D-F: Silver
If the partner cards don’t organically make enough for Gold, which sometimes happens, here is our plan:
- 02 April 2024: Upgrade person C back to Gold. Gold should last until 30 April 2026. (25 months)
- 02 Jan 2025: Upgrade person B back to Gold. Gold should last until 30 April 2026. (15 months)
- 02 May 2025: Upgrade person C, if possible. Gold should now last until 30 April 2027?
- 02 May 2026: Upgrade person B. Gold should last until 30 April 2028.
- 02 May 2027: Upgrade person C. Gold should last until 30 April 2029.
- and so on.
Person B is only Gold until 30 Apr 2026 as when you nominate them on 02 Jan 2025 they are now within the SHORTENED TP year structure.
The reason Person A has an expiry of 31 Jul 2025 is that they have already re-qualified as GGL within their current (OLD) TP collection year.
Going forward subsequent GGL card expiry dates will be 30 Apr 2026 (from the SHORTENED year), 30 Apr 2027 etc.
Going forward the optimum partner card nomination day will be 01 May and will give expiry 30 Apr 2 years hence.

If their end date is 8 Mar 24 and card expiry 30 Apr 24 and you gift Gold status on 1 May 24 then their partner Gold card should last until 30 Apr 26.

Perhaps I'm missing something really obvious here, but is it the case that you have to renew at 3,000 Tier Points every year to benefit from that reduced threshold?
In other words, it's not possible to do the 'renewing every second' year trick by getting all your Tier Points just after each alternate membership year end during your 'grace period' - unless you were to get 5000 Tier Points every second year?
Obviously with the grace period soon being only a month, earning even 3000 TPs would be hard enough.

Doing a qualification every 2nd year nowadays would only save 1000 TPs as you would need to get 5000TPs every 2nd year and almost certainly would have periods of non-GGL status.

Thanks for this. The question is whether it is even possible to nominate C for Gold on both 02 April 2024 and 02 May 2025, since they would already be Gold until 30 April 2026 from the 02 April 2024 nomination. My hope is that the 02 May 2025 nomination would then be valid through 30 April 2027, but its unclear from the FAQ.

To my knowledge nominating someone with the same status they already have doesnt work - i.e. I dont think it will add a year on.

I think I know the answer but thought I would try my hand in the GGL thread.
Later this year I am arriving on QF9 from PER-LHR, getting into T3 at 5am. Will I be permitted access to the BA arrivals lounge in T5 arriving on another LH OW flight as GGL?

I believe the only difference between Gold and GGL in this matter is the ability to have guests and possible access to the baths.

It actually works (I mistakenly renominated someone I had already given a gold card to). The nominated cardholder gets an email saying "As you're already a Gold Member, this means that at the end of your current membership year, you'll automatically remain at the Gold tier for another 12 months. At the start of your new membership year, your Tier Points will be set to zero. However, your Avios will still be there [...]".
