Thank you IMH. Am I correct in thinking that the LH business seat isn't horizontal? I've no experience of LH. Can't decide whether to go via EWR or try and find something straight through to LHR or FRA. Would prefer to get the overnight slog over and done in one go without a stop on the easy coast.

Edit: and thank you msmorley. My ideal was to get a horizontal bed for the longest possible sector, ie west coast to one of the European hubs. I'm actually aiming for GLA, so assumed that UA or LH to FRA would be the best choice. If LX were in the running, however... hmmm. Will have some thinking to do.

Its not completely flat. Its one of those that you need to keep on pushing yourself up from.

You're right about the LH C seat. If you need a fully flat seat to sleep, LH C isn't for you (although, subject to space in your assigned row, the seat can be hacked to fully flat).

If you can get home from ZRH, the LX option is a no brainer. Lots of positive reports, for example here.

StarAlliance.com says LX39/LX326/BD62 or BD12 are valid routes with LX to EDI and GLA respectively. More hmmm-ing and ahh-ing.

Given a free choice of seats in C I'd rank the choices in this order:

LX New C
UA New C
LH C
LX Old C

I don't know if LX's A343s will be of the refitted variety next month but when I looked for a redemption in April they were expected to be on the SFO route. LH SFO-FRA is a 744 so will have the new UA seats ^

However, if you can find availability SFO-LAX and LHR-EDI/GLA to match, I'd favour NZ2 LAX-LHR which has availability on 15 & 16 February over all of the above

Cheers,

m.

Good spot and good recommendation. Even if there's no SFO-LAX redemption availability, a ticket can usually be had for $75.

Ummm... yes... quite . That sentence started out saying something rather different about LH 747s and UA's 777 fleet. I wish LH had UA's new seats rather than the wedgy-inducing ski-slope...

LHR to JNB on SAA

I need some help please. Going to use miles for two one way C class tickets from LHR to Johannesburg on South African Airways on 10th December. Can see availability. Before calling Diamond Club can anyone please advise how much I should expect to pay in taxes and surcharges? Will appreciate any advise. Thank U!

The best way is to make a dummy booking on the Operators website, and you can also make use of the "tax calculator" referred to in the READ THIS FIRST sticky.

LH C seat is not as bad as a lot of people claim. I'm 6'2 and not at all slim, but I sleep okay in it. It's not brilliant, but it's okay.

LX new C are very nice, but at the end of the day, does anyone have a proper nights sleep on a plane anyway? I normally get a few hours fitfull snooze but it's hardly what you'd call refreshing. Even the NZ, Virgin style beds aren't that brilliant.

My advice would be to go on whatever flight time is shortest and spend the hours you save sleeping in a bed on the ground...

Made a call to Pune but they explained they can't easily quote taxes and charges for Air NZ. (??) AirNZ.com says $23 for a one-way LAX-LHR in J; the taxes spreadsheet I downloaded from this forum suggests $80ish. Can someone beat me with the newbie stick and tell me whether I'd pay LHR departure taxes if I connected LAX-LHR-GLA (and what the total would roughly be)? Thank you for all your thoughts.

Doesn't seem so:

1st ever redemption!

Hi, I am hoping you guys can help me out. I am about to book my first redemption and thought I had better seek your guidence first and check availibility. Ideally I'd like to be on the same flight as my friends if possibly with the shortest travel time. The flight would be in economy so i could travel with my friends. I am planning to book two single flights as my inbound and outbound destinations are different. The flights are with continential. Here are the details of my trip:

Depart Heathrow: 10:45 Thur 17th March 2011
Arrive: 16:10 IAH
Change Planes. Connect time in Houston, TX (IAH - Intercontinental) is 3 hours.
Depart: 19:10 Arrive: 21:03 Thurs 17th March Guatemala City

Travel Time:
16 hr 18 mn

Depart Roatan, Honduras (RTB): 13:00 Sun 17th April 2011
Arrive Houston, TX IAH: 16:54 Sun 17th April 2011

Change Planes. Connect time in Houston, TX (IAH - Intercontinental) is 1 hour 31 minutes.

Depart: 18:25 Sun 17th April 2011
Arrive: london Heathrow 09:35 Mon 18th April 2011

Travel Time:
13 hr 35 mn

The outbound date cannot leave any earlier but the inbound date could be flexible by a few days. Could some please check avalibility please? would be much appreciated! also does anyone know the opening hours and days for the call centre to book?

many thanks again

Thank you Caz312. Clearly this isn't going to be as easy as I thought! sorry to trouble you or anyone else again, but does anyone know what my best options would be to fly to Guatamala on the 17th of march (with the shortest flight time) and then to fly back from roatan around the 18th of april?

any help would be greatfully appreciated!
