Even so...you need to ask yourself if it's worth the trade off:
what you get for the short haul business above paying for that economy fare, versus what you could otherwise spend those miles on.

GLA-EWR in J next month
...Just realised Award Nexus is now charges.
I am wondering if someone could check and give me a rough idea of business availability for a GLA-EWR return early next month.
Also, i understand we would be likely to get the new J cabin but may end up with the older one -does this sound correct? Is their other better business cabin options to New York?
Thanks

Am i correct to say that the AC option(better business class) to NYC would involve 2 connections in LHR & YYZ or do they have a direct from Scotland to YYZ? I will need to look into it a bit better. Thanks

Yep. Or you could try via FRA or ZRH? That's a one stop routing from up north and offer better seats.

LX is reputedly in a different class, to pick up on lallyr's suggestion, and might be fun to try. But you'd be paying a hefty time and convenience premium.

CO's BusinessFirst is a solid product and IMO more than acceptable even if you end up in the old seats. It's not as if UK-NYC is a 12 hour flight. I've only tried AC once and didn't find it to be anything special -- certainly not special enough to be worth adding connections.

It'd certainly avoid it if I could. The advantage of flying to LAX rather than the East Coast is that you're actually on one plane long enough to eat, digest and get some sleep before you arrive. Depending on the time of year, you also reduce your exposure to the risk of weather-related delays and cancellations. LAX-LAS is short enough to be tolerable in any carrier, in Y.
Where would you be starting from?

Disclaimer: I am the creator of Award Nexus.
Looks like I did a poor job communicating the change: Award Nexus still has a free community membership for FT members.
I started offering premium services for heavier use, but for a quick award check, the 100 free points allowance is good for about 15 weeks of availability scan.
