Folks - the threads have been merged to keep the FAQ and the discussion in one place. It also means I can keep on top of editing the main FAQ as it was previously locked.
Thanks for your thanks and more importantly, thanks for the feedback. I will be making a few updates from the first suggestions ^

Due to the complex way in which availability is calculated and released, the mere fact that seats are available on each segment of your planned itinerary does not mean that they are available on the itinerary as a whole. E.g. MAN-FRA: wide open; FRA-ORD: wide open; MAN-FRA on a MAN-FRA-ORD: nothing. In such circumstances the ICC may or may not be able to book it for you.

Good work, RAPC. ^
One small comment on when to search: yes, well in advance is best. However, at the other end of the spectrum, for premium classes, especially long-haul on LH, it is also worth having a look at the last minute (say, a couple of weeks before desired flight date or less) as LH will sometimes release seats quite late if the bookings are below expectations.

Done that, so how do I go about logging in to ANA?
The log in page for the ANA tool can be found at https://aswbe-i.ana.co.jp/p_per/sky_...SearchLogin.do

Noticed a new option :
ANA Mileage Club members have the option of selecting "Keep me logged in" and having the site "remember" them the next time they visit. ^
take note, bmi.
