Date: June 4 - 11
One -way rental - Fairbanks - Anchorage
(can't find anyone so far who doesn't charge drop off fee - would love it if someone know a company that doesn't)

Best rate found: $850

Depending how many days you're in Fairbanks vs Anchorage, it might be cheaper to split it into 2-3 rentals. Options would be:
1. Fairbanks-Fairbanks
2. Fairbanks-Anchorage
3. Anchorage-Anchorage

Or drop segment 1 or 3 depending how many days your in each. Just play with it and see if it works, but typically the best option is to minimize the days that you've got the 1-way car since they're the most expensive.

I am trying to use the Avis Australia coupons from here: http://www.avisholidaypass.com.au/vo...85200&ID=25439. However, when I enter the AWD and coupon, I get this message:

"YOUR COUPON MUST BE REDEEMED AT THE COUNTER

This coupon will not be reflected online. To redeem your reward, please present your paper coupon at the rental counter.

Some advance reservations are required. If this is noted in the terms and your coupon is associated to an AWD, please enter this AWD with this reservation to ensure you receive proper adjustments at time of pick-up.

Check coupon for full Terms and Conditions."

Anybody have experience with this? How do I know the final cost this way?

I haven't found that Avis AWD codes work in Alaska, due to the specific franchise arrangement there. In Alaskan locations where there is a National Car Rental I have found better rates with them due to an abundance of codes and coupons. Unfortunately, for your specific itinerary it appears that National won't let you do a one way between Fairbanks and Anchorage but perhaps you could use National if splitting up the rentals as suggested by IAHtraveler. Have you thought about driving back to Anchorage? Hope that helps.

Thank IAHtraveler & Emgee for the tips. Seems like a car location to save $$. I'm going to keep looking but i might just have to bit the big bullet if we want to go by car to see more & have flexibility. Rail is expensive too that time of year and takes a long time. Flying isn't that expensive but you miss what you'd see if you drive Fairbanks to Anchorage. Tough choices. So far the best deal I found adds $200 drop off to the cost and end up being $800 for a week.

Try Budget coupon MUGZ022 or Avis coupon MUWA028 to save $30-$35.

Your best bet though may be what others have suggested which is to break it up into 3 rentals with the FAI-ANC portion being as short as possible. You often will find better deals with companies other than Avis/Budget in AK due to the lack of discounts available.

I can't tell you this for sure - but most of the "points" promotions require a coupon code. The AWD is for pricing, and the Coupons are for the points.

Now, it *could* be that this deal is different but in the last six years of weekly rentals from AVIS, I've never seen simply an AWD give you points.

You might check the fine print?

EDIT: OK, I stand corrected. I read the fine print, and dont see anything about a coupon code. Interesting.

Thanks to all who have contributed great AWDs over the years.

I have been watching the rates for an upcoming trip to FL and just hit a great rate using AWD # C682300

It is an Air Canada aeroplan code that gives you 2000 AP for renting a 'larger vehicle' according to the AP promotion.

Entering the code into my reservation gave me an $85 total for a one way from FLL to RSW with unlimited mileage.

To get it to $85 I also used the $20 off coupon off the Avis website for $ day rentals.

EDIT: This was for a 'standard class' car.

bkafrick,

The rental went well. The total was exactly as quoted by AVIS and the AP points came through (500 plus 1000 bonus)

Also, when I pulled up to my space (avis preferred) there was a brand new Ford Edge with leather and fully loaded. Also only 400 miles on the odometer.

And this folks is why I use Avis.

Help me find a good deal [merged with Avis Discount Codes, Post 3247]

Pickup Location (airport, city, or ZIP code/postcode): Denver Airport
Dropoff Location (if different) (airport, city, or ZIP code/postcode): Denver Airport
Pickup Date and Time: Friday February 28th, 8AM
Return Date and Time: Monday March 3rd, 6PM
Vehicle Size Preference: Full Size 4 Door or Premium
Home Country: United States
Age: 22
Best price I've found: 99.20 without any codes

Please consider, I might be willing to pay up to $150 if it can be upgraded to a premium vehicle.

Also, how much money do they hold if you book with a debit card? Hertz holds $200, is it the same?

I've found that the AWD number B323091 drops the premium vehicle from above 300 to $188. I just need to combine this with a coupon code.

Welcome to FlyerTalk! Hopefully you find us helpful enough and stick around and enjoy your time on here. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask or send me a Private Message (click on my handle & it's an option). I merged your post into this thread as we keep the discount discussions here.

Regarding your coupon code: most $ off coupons are only valid up-to full size. If you don't need premium, you might be better off booking full size & then using a coupon to upgrade to premium. The upgrades don't always come through, but it comes down to how much you'd be willing to cough up for being guaranteed the premium.

As for coupons, Avis has a running bunch here: http://www.avis.com/car-rental/conte...navId=T3M00S00

Or the good old fashioned Google search might get something that fits for you.

Another caution: watch out for under-age fees with Avis. Since you're <25, you'll get hit for the fee unless you've found an AWD that drops this fee. But you can only use one AWD.. you can't have the best of both worlds.

I'm seeing a rate of $162.14 right now with that AWD. You can try pairing it with MUWA239 which should take about $25 off. A better deal is with Enterprise through Travelocity for $99.83 all-in.

I'm travelling from Montreal to JFK in Aug this year & looking to rent a car one-way. I know it's a complicate trip - crossing the border plus a 1-way. The only constraint is that I need to visit Niagara Falls on the way. Any recommendations on how to shape this to get the best deal & who to book with?

It's not complicated at all. You can rent from Avis, Budget, National, Alamo or Enterprise. They all do one-way rentals from Montreal to New York (rates with Avis/Budget look particularly good right now for Aug). Use any decent search engine like Travelocity to search for available options. After you book, you can track your rental at AutoSlash and we'll let you know if we find a better deal. The earlier you book, the more likely you are to save.

Pzzszk Feb 21, 2014 12:07 pm

Thanks. Tried Travelocity & it says no cars are available to go from Montreal to JFK. Same with AutoSlash, no cars available. Any other suggestions?

AvisDC Feb 27, 2014 11:20 am

AWD code A114300 is a very good code, however, I had issues at the preferred counter when I went to pick up the car. It was giving me a much higher price ($164) for one day and it took a while to get it right. Even still the discounted price was not deducted until I returned the car. So your credit card will be charged the higher price, but credited once you return the car. I will never use the code again, not for the standing in line and then another 20 minutes to adjust the price. I will pay the xtra $10 or $15 using another code.

Sorry for the late reply here. Send us a PM with your pickup and return dates/times and we'll be happy to help.

Used a Lockheed code to book a car for one day in downtown Miami. Was asked for ID.
