Actually as soon as I mentioned the letter "K" he jumped up that it's only for shareholders.

Does anybody have more info if this is true?

This is an honors perk:

And if you're going to be using the Honors code before Dec 31, you might as well get some extra points along the way:

Rent for 2 days and receive 500 bonus points (coupon number MUHA053) or rent for 3 days or more and receive 750 bonus points (coupon number MUHA054). Provide AWD # K851000 and coupon when you book online at Avis.com

If it says Hilton Honors, then that is not for Hilton shareholders, that is for Hilton frequent guests! No one goes around with stock shares to prove they own shares in a company just to get a rental car!

Codes from several airlines including AA and hospitality programmes, including Starwood and, er, Hilton start with K.

The Avis Europe shareholder code begins with K. Perhaps the employee was thinking of that?

USirritated Oct 27, 2010 12:08 pm

And perhaps the Avis employee was pulling this silliness out of his/her hat! Again, no one should have to carry around stock certificates to prove that they are entitled to use an AWD! However, Avis Europe is notoriously discount averse, and depending on where you are picking up in Europe, you might get all kinds of static regarding both AWD numbers and coupon codes, especially in Italy and Spain. Belgium and The Netherlands, and to a lesser degree, Germany, are more easy going in this area. My recommendation would be NOT to make your European Avis rez online, but to speak with a rez agent, and have them place notes in your rez, and then you are much less likely to get static from the rental counter.

As somebody who rents often in Europe, are the discounts so great that it's worth to buy a couple of their shares?

I've certainly known some station managers who were full of b.s. in my day.

That is not the point at all! Avis does not have rules that require stockholders to carry stock shares with them in order to rent a car! European Avis franchisees are notorious for trying to avoid upgrades and discounts, and that is why that station manager was full of b.s!

I meant to ask if there are big discounts for stock holders, which would make it worthwhile financialy to purchase a small amount of their stocks, in order to save money on rentals?

K444404 still works in Europe.

Just got 21 days in Ireland/Apr 2011 for $200.79 inc taxes!

Thanks dmdflyer!

Is there an upgrade coupon which matches this?

The problem is never making the reservation/rate, it is what happens when you try to pick up the car at the rental counter and they ask for your identification or proof that you have the right to use that AWD number. However, even if it is for a smart car, or some other teeny weeny econobox, $200.79 a.i. is a fantastic rate!

For an upgrade code, you might try TUWA016, which is good for a one car class upgrade. I would suggest calling Avis reservations, and asking for the coupon code to be put into the rez, because they will tell you whether or not that is a valid coupon to use for your rez, which will also let you know whether that code may be used for international. TUWA016 is a paperless coupon (meaning it is electronic), so the counter agent should never ask you to produce it.

No.

The Founder rate (for those who bought when Avis Europe demerged) was 50% off rack and beat everything else around. It's 20% now, and little different from some other rates.

Oh, it's no longer available to new shareholders.

It's an Opel Corsa, minis are sold out. Kinda scary, I'm 6'-5" and do an excellent Mr Potato-head impersonation in some small rigs.

I reset my res with your coupon code. I'll set up a dummy res and ask Avis to include the code and see whether it is compatible. I've had luck getting next to smallest rental, usually they don't have it and I get an upgrade.

Thanks for your advice!

Just curious, any strategies for this contingency?

No, it is a well known problem in Europe and in the Caribbean, and there have been numerous people who have been pinched trying to use K444404, and ended up playing two or three times the rate they reserved.
