(Removed Lifemiles hack; see below post for explanation) Posting this here may close the loophole, but in the meantime it is a cheap and easy way to game the system, get a discount on Lifemiles redemptions, and effectively lower the cancellation fee from $210 to $(...).
BTW: I found out that I could not cancel my Business Classic award on Avianca metal. I could change the booking though to a different date and route, and because the new ticket required less Lifemiles, they refunded the difference to my account. Cancelling awards booked on their SkyTeam partners does not have that limitation.
