I can confirm the new egates do not work with a US passport without registration and payment of the fee.

Same at TPE. Preregistration required for foreigners to use egate. The line for foreigners was probably about 300 people long for the immigrant counters, and none at all for Taiwan citizens.
the new generation egates are up and under testing.
Also just want to note how amazingly efficient TPE is. Flight parked at T1 and door opened at 6. Even with having to walk to T2 to clear immigration (which at least is a 5 minute walk), I stepped out of the restricted area with luggage in hand by 6:15. Man, I love TPE.

Ive had trouble showing when I entered Taiwan to some local businesses (some banks, smaller hotels, telecom providers).
They point to my old visa-exempt entry stamps from many years ago. To make matters worse, I have recent exit stamps but no recent entry stamps (the APEC exit line is shorter than e-Gate exit line).
Then I show my passports e-gate / immigration blue exemption stamp. About 75% of the time, the merchant still does not understand, but proceeds with the transaction anyway.
Anyone know a solution for when the merchant insists on proof of entry? Flight itinerary/receipt did not convince them.

I could see there being issues with tax free shopping, similar to the TTP in Japan.
Finally, I'm a bit disappointed since I don't know if I'll ever get to use e-Gate for Global Entry again. I've finally gone forward and begun the process of getting an ARC. My next entry to Taiwan will be to add myself to Mrs. Majuki's household register (for which the household registration office might want to see an entry stamp), and the second entry will be, hopefully, with a JFRV from which I'll turn around and obtain an ARC during that trip. I'll definitely look to register for e-Gate after that but with my ARC.
While this means that I won't have anymore tax free shopping, I can readily produce an ARC for the airline check-in staff when they question my lack of entry stamps.

The Taiwan eGates have been an unmitigated disaster post-covid. Upon registering in 2018, I had zero issues in 2019 or 2020.
Since 2023, I have been unable to use them without assistance from the desk, which ends up taking longer than simply going through the normal queue would do.
Staff are always quick to accuse me of failing to register (or renew, given how long Ive been registered), then feign shock when they discover Ive crossed all my ts and dotted all my is. Its their ...... computer system.
Every time, the staff assure me that it will never happen again, and every time it at this point, I am thinking I should just use my APEC card and abandon the kiosks entirely. ....ing third-world.

I likely won't ever be able to check again based on my post above. (Watch passport control ask why I didn't use the e-Gates upon entering in a few weeks.)

This mirrors my experience. I had no issues 2017 - 2020. I've only had one entry after 2020, and the staff on site insisted I was in the wrong line after the e-Gate failed to work. I got my record updated landside, and I was also assured that things had been fixed. Unfortunately, everyone was being steered toward the e-Gates upon leaving, so I couldn't test to see if NIA actually fixed my record.

I lost my US passport and had to re-apply. So after paying the fee and go through the interview process.
E-gate would work every time entering the country with new passport (still need to fill out arrival card before). But I couldnt make E-gate work on exiting. It turned out my profile was split between new and old passport. So Egate never registered me for exiting the country with new passport. It was finally fixed on most recent trip.
so far no more issue- just be patient and go talk to custom officer after immigration. They finally merged my profile and its ok now:

When I renewed my US passport, I updated my passport on the Global Entry dashboard. NIA pulled my new passport information automatically within a few days after I had updated things on the GE side. My new passport worked the first time at the e-Gates without taking any action with NIA.

I'm wondering why you had to reapply for the program.

Yeah, I don't understand why a hotel would care. I've never had an issue with my passport at Bank of Taiwan for transaction there either. Taiwan Mobile didn't care about entry stamps, but they wanted a 2nd ID that was local, such as an NHI card, ARC, driver's/scooter license, etc., instead of something like a passport plus US driver's license. FWIW, the airport location of Taiwan Mobile had no issue swapping out my passport number for my mobile service without supplementary ID and didn't care about stamps.

As this topic is not specific to EVA nor any one particular airline, we'll move this over to the Asia forum, which covers TPE airport topics. Thanks!
