The funny thing is that the gov't now has the worst of all worlds: they're not collecting the money, but at the same time they're scaring away future travellers!

Only a fool would impose a hefty arrivals fee in the middle of a deep worldwide recession, but does anyone doubt that the Argentine gov't is sometimes foolish?

Well after messing with the #1 sector of the economy (farming), it only makes sense for Queen Cristina to go after #2 (tourism).

visa

arrived this morning and since it has been suspended I obviously had nothing to report. Except that AA FLIGHT over booked and they were offering 800 not go take flight. What happened to depression?? Had thought that I might want to set up an official looking table and collect the 130 from U.S. Citizens... to donate to the U.S Treasury.

Brilliant!

Great News,

Thanks for the update John

Alex, the ACS newletter specified that the implementation had only been postponed. I've seen nothing in the local media as to when it might be implemented.

I flew into EZE on Jan 9 on UA from IAD and the load was only about 50%. The new C cabin had 9 empty seats ... I've never seen that many empty C seats in the past 5 years, and flights are usually completely full in January, since it is the prime tourism month from North America.

Flying back to the US on January 30, the UA flight was probably 90% full, and in chatting with one of the UA employees that I know at the RCC , she said that has been typical of flights in January - low loads from the US, but good loads in the opposite direction. What I don't know is what percentage of the passengers were originating in North America (as opposed to South America).

What was unusual, was the almost complete lack of English/Italian/German/French/Portuguese-speaking tourists in my neighborhood in BsAs during the time I was there.

I suspect the northbound traffic is everyone who went back "home" for VFR purposes over X'mas/New Year and who are headed home. Traffic southbound at yearend is usually very busy.
