Actually, cost is only an issue if you want the wine shipped back to the USA... else, its quite easy actually. All you need to do is find a retailer you trust and ask them to pack the wine properly (so as to not be troubled by the airlines) and then check the wine as luggage. US customs is very lenient with wine.... just declare what you have and you will be fine... ^

My thoughts were that the manner in which he traveled, he went "overweight" on luggage, and as you know LAN has very tight luggage allowances, especially on domestic flights (1 20kg bag), which would have made the flight back to SCL expensive, and if he had another domestic separate ticket in the US, more $.

Ah... yes, in that case I agree that the extra bag or additional weight are indeed prohibitive. Those LAN check-in Matrons do throw the book at you... :td:

That and carrying bottles of wine around Patagonia, primarily when hiking/backpacking, isn't too fun. Although there was storage in Pto Natales. :)

Another time. :)

Ah, but the return can be worth it - I carried a bottle of Glenfidich up the Inca trail in Peru 20 years ago. Sitting at the 1st campsite in the drizzling rain sharing a wee dram with some wandering shepherds was how I spent my 26th birthday.

Do they charge this fee for those with European Union passports?

I am non-reving in on June 16th with a family of six. Can anyone advise if my $140 x 6 has to be paid in cash, or can I use a credit card?

You can pay by credit card, but be sure to call your bank and have them put a travel alert on the card with your travel dates. Would be bad for you not to have cash and have your credit card declined (you can't get to ATM machines or the rest of the airport until you clear immigration).

Do you know if they charge the credit card in US dollars or in pesos?? If it is in pesos there is usually a international currency fee that most American credit cards charge ...

So, if they do charge your CC in pesos, it may be prudent to try and bring cash
if at all possible so you don't get hit w/ the fee ....

Thanks, John, Sdoc and Drek. I'll just take cash in case. But my sister in law, who is a US Foreign Service Officer, says the AR fee is going up to $140 because our fee is doing so. I will plan for the higher amount in case she is right.

Hopefully there will be a lag time for the increase.
