Hello! I work for AA and nevr get the BA route, but manged to get one this weekend. I may take my husband with me, can someone recommend a restaurant that is not a tourist trap? I have been searching this thread, but I am dizzy by now and could only find "El Pobre Luis" that was semi-current. Gaucho where would you send me to?
Also, to go to your shop would I need to make an appointment? If my husband comes with me, I will insist he buys a case or two, if not I will stick to 3 or 4 bottles and just buy them at the shop at the Intercontinental. (I think they gice us a discount, but are their prices on par with other wineshops?)

For anyone going to be in Buenos Aires or Mendoza over these dates might be worth checking out.

Enjoy the best of South American cuisine and wine during the third annual “Masters of Food and Wine South America,” held for two days at the Palacio Duhau Park Hyatt in Buenos Aires, below, Feb. 10 and 11 and at the Park Hyatt in Mendoza Feb. 12 to 15. Visiting chefs include Fernando Trocca of Industria Argentina in New York; Carla Pernambuco of Carlota in São Paulo, Brazil; Enrique Olvera of Pujol in Mexico City; and Francis Mallman of 1884 in Mendoza. Participating sommeliers include Agusti Peris of Madrid and Marcelo Rebole of the Palacio Duhau in Buenos Aires. www.parkhyattmasters.com

I would suggest you dine at Pura Tierra.

http://www.puratierra.com.ar/

They have a short but varied menu where you can have both dead cow :D and other things.... from quail to fish to great gourmet pasta dishes.

I will PM you about your question on the Wine Store.

Hi AASTEW!
A very good place where to have a nice dinner is La Brigada in San Telmo, youŽll have to make a reservation....
Before dinner you can take a walk down in Puerto Madero and enjoy a beautiluff sun set. (about 9PM)
Good luck!:)

I am not aquainted with any of these reccomended places, but a food author living in Buenos Aires asks a cab driver every week to take her to an out of the way restaurant that tourists do not know about and serves good food at reasonable prices. The top ten picks are below.

A few words of "perspective" for some (most) of the places on the above mentioned list.

Please bear in mind that you have street vendors, barebone eateries, and similar "category" places that are being listed. Eating a meal is a complex experience that also has a lot to do with your surroundings.... so for visitors that are not comfortable with an ambiance that is "outside the box".... please tread with caution.

Unless visitors are real chowhounds, then the experience may be a little too rough for most... or at least somewhat uncomfortable/dissapointing.

As I mentioned in another thread, my GF is headed to BA tomorrow. Staying in the Palermo Hollywood area. Three more questions for the experts ...

- Best restaurant in this area?
- Best bar/nightclub in this area?
- English language bookstore in this area or nearby?

Also, if anyone could mention a couple can't miss museums in BA, I'd much appreciate. GF is intrigued by an FT forum all about Argentina and keeps asking me more questions.

We're going to be in B.A. the week of March 21-28 and will be visiting Iguazu from March 25-27. Right now fares seem to be around $340/each roundtrip. Is this what I should expect to pay, or should I wait to see if they go lower?

I looked into award availability and there doesn't look like much is available.

Thanks!

Loads have been very light over the past few months..... then again, fares that are applicable to non residents have not been discounted as much as the resident fares. You still have some time.... I would perhaps wait until the 1st week of March before ticketing, you may be able to get a better deal.

I will be in Argentina during the first week in March with a similar 2 day trip to Iguazu. The lowest prices I've seen has been around $330 RT with lan.com's online booking discount. My trip was originally supposed to be last August so I've been tracking these fares for a while and they never go below $330. I guess it's the non-resident premium that we pay.

Gaucho Tour

Hello,

I was hoping for recommendations on a good full day gaucho tour. Also any thoughts on going on the gaucho tour on a weekday versus weekend day?

Gaucho100K Feb 25, 2009 7:08 am

I assume you mean a day at an Estancia...?

After reading the last two years of posts (Whew!) I can't begin to tell you (OK, I guess I will begin.) how much Alejandro and everyone else have helped my wife and I get even more excited about our first trip to BsAs. We will be coming to town in a week or so and staying for about ten days, including a two day trip to I-Falls at the Sheraton. The first three days we will be at the Intercontinental because we have a great suite deal and figure we can use it as a basis for San Telmo and Puerto Madero walking as well as some of sights nearer the hotel. Then we head to the Falls and come back to BaAs for 2 1/2 more days before returning to the states.

One issue is where to stay for the final part of our trip. We want to be able to walk in Recoleta and Palermo-Palermo Viejo and would like to be in a hotel with local flavor and easy walks to nice restaurants and shops. Our thought right now is Legado Mitico based on suggestions here and on Trip Advisor. The cost would be about $270 US for a larger room. We are wondering whether there would be other hotels we should consider that would be more convenient to our walking the areas we mentioned and a better value or more interesting while still having all the modern conveniences.

We would appreciate any suggestions including those that say we could split the two BsAs parts of our stay in a better fashion to get more contrasting perspectives on the city. We do not want to move more than once but beyond that we are very open to suggestions and recommendations. There is no way we will be able to get the full city flavor (but thanks to Alejandro and others we will get lots of "flavor" with wine and restaurant advice we're read) on our relatively short stay but we'd like to give it our best try. Thank you in advance for any thoughts and, more important, thanks to all of you for helping us get much better informed about, in our minds, one of the world's most interesting cities.
